When you have a special needs kid, there are all kinds of things that other families do without a thought that pose huge issues for you. If you’ve walked around with a stroller and realized how hard it can be to access some places, imagine that double with a wheelchair, for example.
But there are some bright spots. The AMC chain of theaters is teaming up with the Autism Society of America on Saturday to offer a “sensory-friendly” showing of “Madagascar 2” to accommodate kids with autism and their families. Lights will be brighter, sound will be lower and kids will be allowed to get up, dance, yell, whatever helps them express themselves as long as they aren’t threatening their safety or anyone else’s. Families can also bring in their own gluten-free, casein-free snacks
I think this is a great idea – going to the movies is a childhood rite of passage, after all, but if your kid has autism and is susceptible to major sensory overload and to reacting to it with noises or movements, I’m sure taking them to a theater can seem like a crazy dream. I’m glad families can enjoy an outing like this together.
This isn’t everywhere -- it appears none of the theaters in my state are participating, for example. Check the website for details about the wheres and hows. This is apparently a monthly event, so check back.
