First, let's take a moment to be grateful. Grateful that we weren't once tempted to mute the TV in irritation, grateful that our president-elect is articulate and serious and smart. Indeed, brains are back!
Barack Obama showed in his first press conference, just a few moments ago, that he also has a sense of humor and even knows when and how much to use it. No flirting with the press to get reassurances that he's in charge from an all too ready to guffaw pack of lapdogs.
Can it be inauguration day already?
Now, the press conference (and updates on dogs and the girls' schools):
Obama made it clear he's not yet in charge. And that he's not responsible for the mess he's inheriting (but in a nice and gentle way). He didn't bullshit the press, rather said in so many words "don't get your hopes up."
But he was totally focused on the middle class and jobs and a stimulus package, saying if Congress doesn't pass one now in this lame duck session, it'll be his top priority Jan. 20.
Now, the dog. As Sunny reports, the first family-elect has to choose carefully: Malia is allergic. So the family's dream of a shelter dog, ("a mutt like me," Obama said today) may have to yield to a breed that is hypoallergenic. (Crossing fingers it won't be bald.)
As far as schools, nice pass, Barack, nice pass. It's up to Michelle.
