So the Straight Talk Express drove off a cliff. And Sarah Palin has been packed off to Alaska to endure a long, cold winter of political career repair. Barack Obama's getting a tour of the White House from George W. Bush. And Joe Biden's kicking back thinking the gaffe's won't end but the consquences might.
But the rest of us. What about the rest of us? What in the world are we supposed to do now?
Yes, yes, I've seen the video. I would hardly describe myself as being in a catatonic post-election state. It's just that Barack Obama's campaign of change and inclusion and everybody working together doesn't stop now, just short of a week later. Right? I totally get Rahm Emanuel's in charge, and he doesn't need me, per se, on a daily basis. And all the big financial people are putting their heads together to get an economic plan in place and blah, blah, blah.
But me, little old me. What do I need to be doing to help all this change? Yes, we can! (Can what?!!!) I want to do something. I want to help! Aren't you sort of thinking the same thing?
For months (and months and months) I've gotten daily emails from alllllll the candidates and many of their supporters telling me to make phone calls. To donate! To sign the petition! To buy these books! Make a sign and stand on this exact corner or load up the kids and head to this rally. Blog this! Ignore that! Send in your submission for best video/slogan/T-shirt design/campaign photo here!
I loved the task-driven emails. I want to be told what to do. In the last eight years, the only thing asked of me was that I shop and eat in restaurants and put my trust in a leader who totally misused it. See where we are?
Do I plant a victory garden? Knit mittens? Roll gauze into bandages? Up my savings?
What are your plans? Will you stay involved? Does Barack Obama really need us, or do we just sit here nodding our heads and looking pretty?
I'm not asking what my country's going to do for me, I swear. I just want to know what I can do for my country. I'm sure I'm not alone.
