Kids Yell Assassinate Obama on Idaho School Bus

Posted by JeanneSager

Warning: if you’re having a bad day, don’t read this story. Because nothing about a bunch of kids chanting “Assassinate Obama” can make you feel good. Even if you’re a McCain supporter, we’re still talking children supporting murder.

In fact, the parents who brought this case to an Idaho TV station are McCain supporters. But like most parents in America, they’d rather not hear their kids spewing hate and homicidal recommendations on the school bus.

The kids from a Rexburg, Idaho school were actually shouting “Assassinate Obama and Kate,” throwing in the name of one of the bus passengers. Matthew Whoolery’s kids, second- and third-graders who were riding the elementary bus, came home and asked their dad what “assassinate” meant.

First he called the school. Then he called the media. He said he’d like more parents to realize they  need to be careful of what they’re saying in front of their kids. Even a flip comment can be picked up by little pitchers and become an anthem for the pint-sized masses.

I’d like to think that this was a flip comment taken out of context by a child. I’d like to think that people in this country who are angry over the results of an election don’t automatically begin thinking about assassination as a means to salve their frustrations.  The beauty of democracy is our ability to all have our say. So your candidate lost. You can fight a little harder in four years, and maybe you’ll succeed.

But killing the candidate? That’s hate. That’s extremism. That’s un-American. Is that really what you want to pass on to the future of our country?

You were right - this did nothing to improve my day. Twice in the last 8 years, many Americans (myself included) were bitterly disappointed when Bush won. I didn't hear very many people talking about assassinating him, though. I also don't remember people getting in trouble at school or work for just mentioning his name. It seems like race is playing a big role here, and I agree with Matthew Whoolery that the kids on that bus most likely picked up this unacceptable talk from their parents. It seems like there is a lot of this nonsense going on in "real America" ever since Obama won the election, and it's quite disgusting.

That would be "killing the president-elect," and it's nothing to joke about, not even if you're a brat on a bus.  What the hell is wrong with these people?  I am so damn glad my parents moved away from Idaho when I was little; I can't even imagine growing up in that sort of culture.

The scariest thing here is that these kids probably got this from their parents. So here's a question: if someone under 18 is in a drunk driving accident, the parent is responsible, right? How about in this case? I'm fairly certain threatening the President, even the President-elect, is a very serious crime.

It's true, Rexburg is the new cesspool of the US. It made AP, it's everywhere!  I first found it here http://localnews8.com and here http://eaglerocktalks.com

I can tell you that in all of my years living in Idaho and knowing many people from Rexburg, until this campaign began, I had never, ever heard the hate and anger spitting out of their mouths.  Not any election in over 3 decades in Idaho. Rexburg has some real answering to do.

I live in Rexburg.  This is not an isolated incident.  I used to be a member of the LDS Church, but I left it because it no longer made sense to me.  I can tell you that the Madison County School District has a discriminatory hiring policy that basically bars alternative opinion from even existing at its schools.  That's why this happened: Intolerance and bigotry is protected and allowed in the Madison County school system and at BYU-Idaho.

But this story about a few ignorant kids should not take away from the fact that Rexburg is an awesome place to live.  If you want more information about this area, please email me at wcsl.02@gmail.com.  We are in the process of moving a more progressive agenda into this area, and we feel confident that the outdated and racial ideas of the people who have called this place home for the last 80 years or so will eventually be gone from this area.

Don't spread gossip on the internet about this town, just pray for it.  Thank you.

I live near the town where this happened. This is not a bad town any more than the town you live in.  A few kids have given it a bad name. Not all parents are model parents, everyone knows that. Do YOU know what YOUR kids say and do every minute of the day? I think not. Hopefully you have taught them better than these parents taught their children, but, don't judge an entire community based on the actions of a few.  We have a college here that has students of various nationalities and backgrounds. Rexburg is a welcoming, friendly community where we will welcome you with open arms.
