How do we love Michelle Obama? Let us count the ways!

Posted by Shannon LC Cate

Heather Rudolph gets us started with her top five list at Sirens Magazine Rudolph's number one reason ALL women "should" love Michelle Obama (whether they voted for her husband or not) is that Michelle is a good mother.  Also on her list are: 2) She's Smarter than You 3) She's a Realistic Fashion Icon 4) She's a Feminist (frighteningly, perhaps 80% of you won't find that admirable) and finally, 5) She is a Black Woman.

Rudolph gives her own argument for each point and I am thoroughly convinced.  Even more convinced am I of Michelle's feminism and smartness, having read Geraldine Brooks's blog post at The Daily Beast this morning, proclaiming Obama a stealth influencer of important public policy, hiding behind a "mere mom" facade.

If we know anything here at Strollerderby, it's that there's no such thing as a "mere"mom.

But since we've got the "she totally kicks butt in the smarts department" covered, I'll add my shallow number six:  The woman knows what to wear, how to wear it, and where to find it on a budget.  Be still my heart!

Why do YOU love Michelle O?

I love that she interrupts her husband in interviews, and that he defers to her on a lot of questions. Two things I've never seen from a first lady!

She's as tall as Obama, if not taller. And she doesn't try to hide it.

This woman is simply making me smile in a "I'm so much more confident in the future now" way.

I think the "behind every great man..." saying had never been truer than with these two.

Also, she looks like she could kick ass. She must be lifting weights to get arms like that. I love her.

I watched the interview of the Obamas and was disappointed by Michelle Obama’s “I have arrived” disposition. Yet, that is her character that is coming out once again. I share the same position as others in my circle of influence that watched the interview. She repeateldy interrupted her

“husband”, our next president and displayed a brash persona. Barack Obama remained humble and that is what the American people liked about his demeanor. I had much admiration for Michelle prior to this interview. However, I was turned-off by how she answered questions, interrupted her husband (communication- 101 failed), evaded answering questions (i.e. school selection for the children), was sharp tounged toward her husband (e.g. what he will miss becoming President - walks) and description of their past (i.e. apartment) which you may feel a certain way, yet

you don’t always verbalize your thoughts. That is just etiquette. I am confident that someone in her circle of influence will inform her of performance and how it communicated to the American viewrs. I am an accomplished, African female and I was disappointed. This isn’t a time to be “labeled” by on-lookers at this very delicate time in American History and Michelle’s interview didn’t help President-Elect Barack Obama.
