Jolie Gives Up: 'Nursing Twins is Too Hard'

Posted by Madeline Holler

Twin babies Vivienne and Knox Jolie-Pitt have been on the bottle for a month now. Mom -- no, supermom! -- Angelina said that tandem twin nursing was just too hard to keep up.

She told People magazine three months was as much as she could do. "It's very hard" and that the whole thing takes a long time.

From People:

"There's this football hold – it's a lot harder than it looks in the books,” she says in the prerecorded interview at her London hotel on Monday. "I did that a few times. I would take turns. It just takes a long time."

I've never nursed twins or tandem nursed, but that football hold? I did it a few times with my first baby and it worked ... fine. But after figuring out other positions and holds, I looked back at the football thing and was, like, what the hell was I thinking? Situating one baby in my armpit took some coordination. So, yeah, two? Break out the duct tape!

Moms of twins ... let's hear it? Do you sympathize with Jolie? Think she gave up too soon? Is she giving twin nursing a bad rap? Anybody know how long she nursed Shiloh? Because I was actually surprised last month when we saw the pics of her nursing at all. Who knew?

Anyway, Brad's mom and dad are probably very, very relieved that this nursing nightmare is over ... for now.

I had twin boys and I only made it to 4.5 months but nearly killed myself in the process. The boys are INCREDIBLY healthy now at 4.5 years old so I have no regrets. Good for her for trying and knowing when to quit.

I agree, good for her for doing it at all! I have never nursed twins and I admire anyone who has done it for any length of time. However, I have been nursing for 8 years and I think one thing that helps with having a big supply is gaining enough weight. It didn't look like she put on very much weight at all, and with twins I would think you would need a lot of reserves!

I have 2 year old twins who were preemies, and made it to 5 months nursing them. It's HARD!!! Bravo to Angelina for making it to 3 months. It's different for every mom and every baby, but for many it's a huge struggle. Good for her for doing her best, and knowing when to supplement. Those babies will be fine!

I hate when moms judge other moms about breastfeeding. Even moms with singletons have a tough time breastfeeding for three months. My first had breastmilk for over a year and I'm going to try to do it for a year with baby #2, but I know how difficult it could be and won't beat myself up over it as long as I know I tried my best.

That said, I'm very proud of a girlfriend of mine who had preemie triplets and breastfed for a long time, and she had three other children already at the time.

Kudos to all moms who try to do the best for their kids and boo to moms who just want to judge and criticize.

This is one area where we can justify an "A for effort".  As long as you are trying your best you should feel proud.

I nursed my preemie triplets for 14 months. It is truly de hardest thing I have ever done (and that includes the advanced multivariable calculus class I took in college!) but the football hold? it´s the only way to tandem nurse, just needs a little practice!

Three months is pretty good considering she has 4 other young children.  Also, the first three months are the hardest.  It would have been easier each passing month especially once she adds solids.  But it's always a personal decision and you have to weigh the costs and benefits to your family.  Most stars don't breastfeed at all so I think it was great that she even gave it a whirl.

I made it two weeks before I started supplementing at the pediatrician's suggestion -- and I think I would have died of sleep deprivation otherwise! But I still alternate formula and breastmilk, and I could do so indefinitely. Apparently I have enough milk for one baby but not two.

Nursing two does take a *lot* of time. It's hard to do anything else. And yes, for tandem nursing, at least one baby has to go in the football hold or else there's just no room. I have one baby who still has latch issues, so no tandem nursing for me.

I applaud her for nursing them that long. I know many moms who did successfully nurse twins for longer, but so many don't even attempt it.

3 months of breastmilk is far better than none!
