British Moms Ditch Lullabies for Pop Songs

Posted by Kate Tuttle

According to a new (non-scientific!) survey, more British mothers are singing pop songs to their babies than traditional lullabies.  Two thirds of the moms who responded said the modern tunes worked better than older ones for soothing their kids to sleep. One in ten said they could never remember the words to the old songs.

The BBC reported the top ten songs moms mentioned as effective baby-soothers in their homes, including the ubiquitous "I Kissed a Girl," by Katy Perry and "You're Beautiful," by James Blunt, as well as older hits (Oasis' "Wonderwall" and Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful") and flat-out headscratchers (Guns 'n' Roses' "Sweet Child O Mine").

We go in for the traditional lullabies in our house, though mostly of the American variety ("Oh Susannah," "Home on the Range"), mixed in with a lot of Sesame Street and Dan Zanes, but we've been known to modify a Ramones song or two when the purpose is not sleep-inducing but diaper-change-cooperation. What songs work in your house? And what classics have you re-worded to fit your own infant or toddler's name, looks, or personality?

For our daughter Amelia--Simon and Garfunkle's Cecilia, with most of the lyrics adapted, of course!

Amelia, you're breaking my heart . . . I'm begging you please, go to sleep. Go to sleep!

Taking naps in the afternoon with Amelia, up in her bedroom, etc.

Her favorite song. God knows what she'll think when she learns the real lyrics. This was coined in a moment of desperation, while she had colic . . .

Sheri - my family did that too! And it was a superlong time until I learned the real lyrics.  My reaction? The "real" lyrics just got it wrong! :)

We only sang pop songs to our son also. I never knew a lot of lullabies, so It is a little obscure, but our personal favorite was Frank's Theme by Tom Waits. "Dream away the tears in your eyes/dream away your sorrows." Worked like a charm every time.

Maybe "Sweet Child O'Mine" is not a good lullaby, but it sure is fun to sing, especially while holding the baby and doing the Axel Rose shuffle.

Hmmm let's see:

"Woah sweet child of mine/Woah, sweet love of mine"

versus

"I kissed a girl/I liked it/Hope my boyfriend don't mind it"

And the Guns n' Roses song is the headscratcher? PLEASE.

Oh, hell, I've been planning to sing "Sweet Child O' Mine" (sans shredding guitar, of course) to my daughter since before she was conceived. Look at the lyrics and tell me they're not perfect for a baby girl:

She's got a smile that it seems to me

Reminds me of childhood memories

Where everything

Was as fresh as the bright blue sky

Now and then when I see her face

She takes me away to that special place

And if I'd stare too long

I'd probably break down and cry

Sweet child o' mine

Sweet love of mine

She's got eyes of the bluest skies

As if they thought of rain

I hate to look into those eyes

And see an ounce of pain

Her hair reminds me of a warm safe place

Where as a child I'd hide

And pray for the thunder

And the rain

To quietly pass me by

My 4-year old has had Beatles' songs sung to her since she was a newborn. She still loves those songs (although I think it confused her when she first heard the Beatles singing "daddy's songs").

The other day at bedtime, I was singing Bowie songs to my 1-year old son (okay, so Star Man was an odd choice, but...)

My daughters loooove "Sweet Child O' Mine"! Now that they're older, they sing along when it comes on the radio. Awesome.

Aw, I guess I shouldn't have been so harsh on "Sweet Child O Mine." Not my taste, but I can see that it's been a sweet song for a lot of you! As for me, we've long adapted "I Kissed a Girl" to "I kissed a baby -- and I liked it!" which never fails to crack us up.
