New Food Pyramid Promises to Help Picky Eaters

Posted by JeanneSager

Is there anything your kid won't turn his nose up at? Help is on the way - via the federal government.

The new version of the USDA food pyramid breaks down the old one size fits all triangle, with a Website directed toward parents of the two-to-five set. MyPyramid for Preschoolers is being touted as the answer to all their nutrition needs.

The site launched this fall, with a customizable plan section that allows parents to input their child's age, gender, and amount of physical activity. When I tried inputting my daughter, however, I got a message saying the server was unavailable. So I can't say what comes next.

The site does, however, calm the nerves of parents of those picky eaters with reminders that kids who are growing normally are probably just fine (nice to hear something positive from the government), and tips on how to get them to eat something different - without hiding the food. We're talking ideas like give them new foods at the beginning of a meal, when they're so hungry they'll eat anything.

A lot of it is common sense, but for parents who have spent as much time as me worrying about their own weight vs. health issues, it's nice to have a little extra help. And it's nice to have something that we can relate to our pint-sized kids without having to account for their much-smaller sizes.

Hey, I'll give anything a try at this point.  I think my daughter is eating less and less every day!  Stubborn little monkey!

What happened to the good old fashioned "If you won't eat what is served, you miss a meal?" Seriously? If you give kids unhealthy chicken nuggets and fish sticks and peeled apples, of course they aren't going to want to eat normal food! Missing a meal won't kill them and it will teach them that the world doesn't revolve around them. When they are hungry enough they will eat anything you serve them.

I actually agree with mehndilotus. I don't take a big stand on it with my kids, because I want mealtime to be fun and enjoyable. Still, I just don't offer anything I wouldn't want them to eat. I do offer servings from all the food groups, and they don't always eat everything from every meal. It seems to balance out over the course of the day or week though, so I am not too upset if they don't eat all of the components of every meal. I have to admit, though, that my kids are only two. I am very aware that picky eating might be more of an issue for them later!

Easier said than done.  I have served meals that she won't touch...she is stubborn.  I don't give my kids junk food and I'm not sure why my 2 1/2 year old is so picky.  She ate whatever homemade baby food I made and has never been to McDonalds (or anything like it).  When she started eating on her own, everything changed.  My 5 year old eats almost everything and I haven't done anything different between the two.
