Mom Nurses Kindergartner

Posted by KeriF

Some might argue that if a child is old enough to ask to nurse, he's too old to be nursing. I would argue that if a child is old enough to tell you exactly what your breast milk tastes like, he's definitely too old to be nursing.

And what does Robyn Paul's breast milk taste like?

Vanilla ice cream. (I'll take her son Tiernan's word for it.)

Tiernan is nearly 6 years old, but he still asks for "nummies" a couple of times a day. (His word, not mine.)

Tiernan's mom thinks there are more women nursing well into toddlerhood than you might think. "There are those women that do nurse that keep it under wraps because they're afraid of what others are going to say about it," she said.

Paul says she nurses to comfort Tiernan, but I can't help but wonder if her son will ever learn to comfort himself.

I knew three year olds (back when my first was that age) who were still nursing who equated breast milk with vanilla ice cream.  One even preferred ice cream so her parents used it as a weaning tool - ice cream before bed instead of nursing! :-)

The "If they're old enough to speak/ask for/describe breast-milk, than they're old enough to be weaned!" argument is one that has always baffled me.  Are we penalizing early talkers now?

That said, 6 years old?  Um, no.

Mine tastes like breyer's Vanilla Ice cream, to be exact. And my boy, at 18 months, said he liked it better than ice cream!

We stopped when he was 2.5, and will probably go the same for Baby Girl. I just can't figure out how comfortable it would be physically to nurse such a  large child. Although that 6 year old looks pretty tiny compared to my kids. And is he wearing a onsie??? Or just really short shorts?

THAT is not a six year old pictured above! He is in a onesie and a diaper and he is too little!

Our daughter is 16 months and still nursing. I would like to let her self-wean, but even I don't like the idea of nursing a 5 or 6 year old. The idea of that totally bums me out. But my daughter does ask for it - she says "boo boo" and drags and a pillow over to me. Everyone thinks this is weird :-(

I think it's great your 16mo old is still nursing and asks for what she needs, MomofBeans. My 17mo old does the same, but she signs "nurse" using ASL.

MomOfBeans and SeekingJoy-- good job for nursing as long as you are. I nursed my son until he was three and a half and it wasn't awkward. After about two years old, it became something we did at night and in the mornings when we were at home or given a private area. I wouldn't trade that for anything. We are very bonded. I facilitated the weaning but he made the choice and was proud of it and he never asked again. Just because you go passed what people THINK is the norm, doesn't mean you have to go until they are 5, 6 or 7!

There are many European countries that average four years of nursing!

There's no way that kid's 6, and if you look at the flickr pics it says she's nursing her daughter (who looks to be maybe 3???) not her 6 yr old son . . .

I don't know about the If They Are Old Enough To Ask idea, but I think biolgically speaking teeth are natures way of suggesting actual food.  If they only needed breast milk why would nature give them teeth so early?

MChaos--You have that totally, completely backwards. Humans get teeth late for mammals, not early. Like most mammals, we get two sets of teeth.

Dogs are born with their first set. Humans get them over the first couple of years.

Dogs, like most mammals, wean when their SECOND set of teeth come in. If humans "should" wean upon eruption of second set of teeth, then we wean at 5-6 years old.

So your argument about teeth is an argument FOR nursing kindergarteners.
