Dad Sells Daughter for Beer; Calls Cops for Non-Payment

Posted by JeanneSager

I applaud stupid criminals - especially when their stupidity lands their own sorry butts in jail. Like Marcelino de Jesus Martinez.

The California father has been charged for allegedly selling his fourteen-year-old daughter into a forced marriage with an eighteen-year-old. So how did police catch him?

Martinez allegedly called them when the groom-to-be, Margarito de Jesus Galindo, didn't turn over the agreed upon some for the poor little girl's hand. According to news reports, the neighbors had worked out a deal that would have included handing over one hundred cases of beer, $16,000, several cases of meat, wine, Gatorade and soda. When Galindo reneged, cops said Martinez called for help in getting his daughter back. Ah, so now she's worth something to him? Something more than the makings of a good backyard barbecue?

Martinez has been booked for "receiving money for causing person to cohabitate" and Galindo for statutory rape.

The most disturbing part of all of this? The girl went willingly - because it's an accepted practice where she's from.

The incident happened in Los Angeles, but her family hails from Mexico - and police in the LA area say they are finding more and more Mexican immigrants (generally from remote areas of the country) are engaging in similar practices. So while many people in America still think of "human trafficking" here only in relation to a coyote bringing people over the border and forcing them into slavery, it's happening within the confines of a family life too.

Sadly, that only compounds the problem for Martinez. He is obviously lacking as a father, but if he's from a community that condones this behavior, chances are, he doesn't even think he did anything wrong.

I'm not from Mexico, but I doubt that selling a daughter for money is common practice in their country. Even if it happens - because we know that in very poor communities sometimes parents may send their own daughter to prostitution - it is probably considered a crime.

I am Mexican, from a remote area of Mexico. My parents haven't shipped me off  to get married, and if I did my "community" would not be encouraging it, and would have the same outrage that this article did, with none of the unbased accusation towards Mexicans. That being said, I am sure there is a small number of people who do this...Marrying VERY young is accepted in Mexico.

Mexican: I hardly meant all Mexican people would support this.

Please don't add words to what I said - I merely noted that the police in this case (you can go to the link and interviews on said link) said there has been an increase in these sorts of cases involving Mexican immigrants from remote areas of the country. . . where THEY SAY these practices are accepted as commonplace.

I could just as easily have been referring to somewhere in the Asia or Europe where people happen to be known to sell their daughters, but this case happens to be in Mexico.

No offense is meant toward the Mexican people overall (toward this particular places to which the police refer, yes, all offense intended!)

It is true in some areas of Mexico it is normal to marry at very young ages.  In my Marriage & Family class, a young classmate (17) was showing pictures of her married 12 year old cousin's 6 month old baby.  She said her cousin wasn't considered young to be married at all.
