Recall after Five People Die; Tainted Peanut Butter Blamed

Posted by Shannon LC Cate

A company manufacturing peanut butter sold in bulk to institutions and food manufacturers has recalled its product after the deaths of at least two, perhaps up to five people (in three cases, the cause of death is still being determined).  400 people have fallen ill in 43 states due to salmonella traced to the peanut butter.

What makes this outbreak particularly upsetting is the institutional aspect. This peanut butter goes to schools, nursing homes and food manufacturing companies that use peanut butter as an ingredient in other foods.  Customers of "Parnell's Pride" and "King Nut" brand peanut butter are being informed by phone of the recall.

Kelloggs is also recalling its Austin and Keebler brand peanut butter crackers as a result.  No outbreaks have been traced to these snack crackers, but to stay on the safe side, it's probably a good idea to return any you might have in you cupboard.
