Family Pets in Abundance: The Danger of Hamsters

David Curran over at SFGate has a cute story about a new family pet that offered happiness in abundance. Cupcake, their new hamster, was seemingly just one large, bloated hamster.

It didn't dawn on the family that it might be something else:

We all hurried into the bedroom and there was Cupcake, who is now shaped more like a cannoli, and her little brood, all shrivelly and pink and the size of gummi bears. Healthy mommy, healthy babies, at least for now

But what to do with them? Take them back? Give them away? Eat them?

This reminded me of the time we brought home a goldfish and a tiny shrimp. The next morning, we stared longingly at the shrimp and wondered how on earth it could suddenly be feasting on teeny, tiny fish while the goldfish swam, exhausted, in the corner.

So what do you do with a sudden excess of family pets?

I can sooo relate.  Our jack russell terrier died.  I called the breeder to let her know.  She called me a few months later to let me know that Merit's niece was available for adoption.  We were thrilled and made arrangements to pick up our new dog.  Three weeks later, imagine my surprise when said dog gives birth. She didn't look pregnant to me.  Seriously.  The first pup was stillborn.  We named him Starr.  The second was fine and we were so excited.  His name was Lucky.  Lucky wasn't so lucky because three days later, his mom accidentally smuthered him.

It was awful.  But I guess some things are just meant to be.

I had a similar experience with a guinea pig.  Came home from school one day, went to her cage and there were, and I quote "Mommy, Mommy!  There's more guinea pigs in there!"  Since she was clearly pregnant when we got her, my mom called the pet store and informed them of the birth.  We let Daffodil raise them and then brought them to the pet store when there were old enough to be sold (I think the guy even paid my mom for the babies...)

Why does that Hamster have six eyes.  Weird.  Is it a mutation of some sort??

So so weird: I named my childhood guinea pig Daffodil, too, and she was also pregnant! She only had one (female) baby, so we kept both :)

My sister bought what they pet store said was a male hampster for her daughter. A few days later the hamster had babies. 5-6 I think. The pet store took the babies back, since it was their mistake (no idea if they paid for them or not). At least it was an easy change - she had named "him" Sam, which promptly became Samantha, of course.
