Florida Principal Says "No Gay-Straight Club for You!"

Posted by Shannon LC Cate

When high school and middle school students in Yulee Florida public schools put together their plans to form a gay-straight student alliance, they were told that clubs with names referencing sexual orientation would not be allowed and their club was denied.

I'm sure it was the "straight" part that got to them.

Gay-straight alliances have been forming in middle schools and high schools for about a decade now.  There are hundreds of them all over the country.  The clubs are student-led, faculty advised, and follow the setup rules of any other school club.  Their purpose is to bring students who are queer-identified together with students who aren't and ally them in keeping the school safe for everyone.

The ACLU has taken up the cause of the kids in Yulee and will be arguing that the school administration's decision to disallow the club violates the Equal Access Act, since other clubs organized in the same way are allowed to use school facilities.  This isn't the first time such a challenge has been posed for a gay-straight alliance, and it won't be the last.

Meanwhile, good luck to the brave kids in the Yulee schools for holding out for what is fair.

This sort of thing really makes my blood boil.

GSA's are incredibly valuable and important. Children are harassed and bullied way too much in school. Any club that brings students together to work against an unsafe environment should have the full support of the school staff.

I don't think any club about sexual orientation should be allowed in middle or high schools. I wouldn't approve of my child joining any such club, no matter if it was gay, straight, or GSA.  Even if there are hundreds. I don't believe that just because something exists in a large amount that makes it okay.

College? Different matter.

If the rule is based solely on the name of the club, they should just change it to the "Equality Alliance" or something, and thumb their noses at the administrative biddies who use these kinds of semantic games to enforce their own prejudices without coming right out (heh) and saying "No queers allowed!"

Sue, discrimination (based on sexual orientation) against kids doesn't wait until they are in college. Why would you feel that a GSA is inappropriate for high school? You do realize that it actually has nothing to do with sex, right? No one is meeting in these groups to discuss all the hot gay or straight sex they are planning to have. I know if 15 yr. old kids who were afraid to go to school because of their orientation and how that was perceived. What could possibly be wrong with a club that fosters understanding and acceptance of ALL students? When adults judge something this productive and meaningful as somehow indecent, it really adds to the problem.

Sorry Manjari, didn't check back till now so just saw your question. The very title of the club is about sexual orientation, so yes, I will take them at face value and say that it is about that.

The title of the club uses the words "gay" and "straight." The kids are gay and straight even if they've never had sex. GSA's are not about sex. You are misunderstanding the entire point.

Sue, should children also be forbidden from having or discussing race or ethnicity until college?
