Slumdogs No More: Two ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ Kids Get New Houses

Posted by SunnyChanel

The kids of the Academy Octo -Awarded film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ are having quite a week. First they are whisked away from their home in Mumbai to attend the glamorous Oscars ceremony. Then they paid a visit to the Happiest Place on Earth, Disneyland. And now, the icing on the cake, the cherry on top, the event that goes beyond just fun-filled memories; two of the Slumdog kids are getting new houses.

Rubina Ali and Azhar Ismail, two of the real slum dwelling children who played the young versions of the protagonists of the film, have been “gifted” with new homes courtesy of the Indian government.  A government spokesperson stated, "These two children have brought laurels to the country, and we have been told that they live in slums, which cannot even be classified as housing."

This dwelling windfall is in addition to the professionally managed trusts set up for the kids by the producers of the film. The film producers had intended to move the young actors into apartments but Indian government came in to save the day, in what some are speculating as merely a political ploy before their upcoming elections.

Regardless, the kids are getting new houses, will be getting rides to and from school and the guilt surrounding the idea that these kids were being exploited can be happily assuaged.

Do you have to call the kids slumdogs. It's more than a little derogatory.

Would you make a play on words with the N-word? Its a dehumanizing term, meant to convey superiority and judgement.

Esther,

The n-word is a term storied with abuse and history, which is what makes it so offensive.

The word slumdog was actually made up for use in the movie. Dogs, in Hindu culture, are regarded as unclean and dirty animals. Much like rats in the U.S. So an appropriate translation for the word could be 'Streetrat millionaire'.

Streetrat was used in Aladdin, a Disney movie. Going to call them out on that racist slur? Throw a tizzy over something deemed appropriate for a children's movie?

You don't have to like or agree with the title of hte movie, but to make illogical jumps from the innocuous title of a movie to a derogatory and offensive slur seems like some seriously shoddy, Elizabeth Hasselback logic to me.

Innocuous? No. Actually, the term dog has a long history as a racial slur in India, used by the British against Indians. As you stated, dogs are considered unclean animals in Hindu culture, so to apply that word to a human being is considered deeply offensive.  It is not the "slum" but the "dog" that has, not just me, but many people in India very offended. Comparing "slumDOG" to the n-word is a valid because both have long histories as abusive terms meant to degrade and humiliate. There have actually been several protests by slum-dwellers in India, asking that the word dog be removed from the movie's title.

There is nothing even the slightest bit illogical about taking offense directing an established and historically hurtful and offensive racial slur to children. Perhaps you shouldn't be so naive as to assume that just because a word doesn't carry a negative connotation in your own culture, that it could not be considered offensive in another.

And, seriously, Elizabeth Hasselback? Those are fighting words
