Placentas Washing Up in Illinois Sewer

Posted by Madeline Holler

A public health administrator in Champaign, Ill., is asking that whoever is dumping fresh born plancentas into the local sewage system to, you know, stop it.

For the third time, workers at the local water treatment plant found afterbirth caught in a filter designed to keep large foreign objects (including human organs!) out of the treatment facility.

The placentas are consider potentially infectious medical waste and regulations forbid disposal in the sewer system.

The department apparently believes the flushed placentas were from homebirths. From a letter released by the public health office:

The individual or individuals in the community that have been engaging in this practice must stop immediately and begin disposing of the medical waste associated with home births in an approved manner. ...

Local health authorities strongly encourage community members to alert the proper agencies if they have any information regarding the unauthorized disposal of medical waste.

Authorities are investigating.

I think there's probably  more to this story. Illinois is another of many states were midwifery is basically, if not outright, illegal. But homebirths attended by illegal midwives happen frequently and have been documented. So I think there's probably something more to this case -- that it's not some illegal but skilled and trained midwife flushing placentas down the toilet. Then again, I watch too much Law & Order.

Be like me and throw the things in the trash.

Flushing a placenta is like flushing a pot roast.  I would never think to attempt it!  I doubt that the average placenta of a term pregnancy would come close to fitting.  Not through my toilet, anyway.  Then again, I suppose the article doesn't say that the placenta was whole.

I'm suspicious that they are already laying blame at the foot of home-birth midwives.  I bet they find something a bit more institutional as the cause - if they find it.

ick. ick. ick.

Exactly, a pot roast!  A real hippy would eat it.  Get a recipe on line.   Come on, eat it!  I dare ya.  What?  You'll labor in your own internal muck at your water birth but the placenta's too icky.  Come on, Hippies. . . EAT!

I think the government is trying to ferret out underground midwives. I attended a hearing for HB 226, a bill to license home birth midwives in Illinois like they do in 26 other states, The testimony given by three experts in support of the bill was AMAZING AND convincing beyond a doubt, but it seems that the reforms in Illinois politics hasn't filtered down to the legislature. They're so quick to oust the governor for looking for money while eight out of twelve committee members obviously voted to keep the Med Society lining their pockets. (Go to followthemoney . org)
