Brits Say Michelle Obama Cheaped Out on Gifts

Posted by JeanneSager

Somebody please remind the British press that the world's economy is in the dumps.

Their latest gripe about America? Michelle Obama didn't give "nice enough" gifts to the British prime ministers children. Or, to be precise, the first lady's gifts to Gordon Brown's boys were not as nice as the outfits bestowed on Sasha and Malia Obama by the prime minister's wife.

During her meeting with Sarah Brown, Mrs. Obama apparently handed over two toy models of Marine One, the Presidential helicopter, for the Brown boys, Fraser and John. Yes, toy helicopters for little boys. How dare she? (It should be noted that the Brown children are not the ones acting like prats here.)

Sarah Brown, by the way, went all out with dresses from Top Shop accompanied by matching necklaces and a series of children's books by British authors. Perfectly nice gifts, of course. But does that make them any better than some toy helicopters for little boys? My daughter would LOVE a toy helicopter.

The exact charge from the London Times was that Michelle Obama was "solipsistic" because the models of Marine One rubbed in the Browns' faces that her husband is president of the United States. Er, OK. But he is. And last time I checked, that's WHY Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Obama were exchanging pleasantries. If we're really going to put that spin on it, couldn't it be argued that a selection of British literature is a slam on the American lit the girls are used to? (Not that I'd agree, just playing devil's advocate here). Or perhaps I'm rubbing it in my southern in-laws faces that their son married a Yankee when I bring them jugs of fresh maple syrup from New York to Virginia?

Perhaps the British press could find something better to focus on than the toys given to two little British children by the first lady of the United States. Like, maybe, what their father was in town to discuss?

I can't imagine that the prime minister's boys want for anything. They probably have more than they could ever need, and will be taken care of very well for their entire lives. A toy helicopter is a perfect gift for a little boy. I think it is in poor taste to expect something more for 2 kids who have more than enough.

I don't care if she gave them one piece of candy each and that's it - you don't complain when you recieve a gift.  How rude.

YOu can to complain when someone gets you a gift.  If the thought sucked and that is all that mattters, then it sucked.  Also, in high society you give pricey gifts, duh!

Honestly, most of us Brits couldn't give a flying f*** what gifts were given to the Scottish Prime Minister.  Just tell him to get on with his damned job!

Reality check: these are dignitaries, and gifts are CUSTOMARY. Grabbing toys from the White House gift shop is not okay when you're president. I can't imagine who was responsible for this completely preventable gaffe. Staff should have thought of these things far in advance and taken care of it.

One thing you need to understand is that this gift exchange is between two nations, and because of that the quality is representative of the opinion of the two nations to each other. In other words, giving the head of another country a gift from your gift shop is pretty much a slap in the face. It says to them that you don't care enough about them to pick out a gift specially or spend anything more than an average tourist. Gifts between leaders of countries are very different than our own gift-giving to friends. Which, really, this is equivalent to getting your friend a coupon to McDonalds from the local paper when they give you a new plasma tv.

One other thing: the Prime Minister and his wife never said a word about the gifts. The press was doing the complaining and sniping, not the Browns. The Browns were actually very gracious about the gifts.

That's an important distinction. Don't call them complainers because they aren't!

Laura: Actually, I was very careful to point that out: "(It should be noted that the Brown children are not the ones acting like prats here.)"

Jeanne- That was directed at other people commenting, not you. You made the distinction very well.

Okay, a few things.

1) The people who received the gift *did not complain*. So there's no rudeness on their part

2) I'm British and I've heard nothing about this. As far as I'm aware, nobody in Britain cares one jot about the gifts exchanged between Obama and Brown; we care about the direction the 'special relationship' will take.

3) The Times is part of the press. The press will, and do, make comment on a multitude of inane and dull occurrences. This shouldn't come as a surprise!

So 'Brits Say Michelle Obama Cheaped Out on Gifts' is not entirely accurate. Although I can see why someone would be annoyed that the official photograph was clearly geared towards ensuring Michelle Obama looked good with little regard for the appearance of Sarah Brown.

But hardly a newsworthy item on this island.

Tom - I apologize that you took that as ALL Brits! I'm rather fond of the British in general (even if Beckham has already disappointed us and moved on . . . sigh).

But FYI, it wasn't just the Times. It was the Telegraph, the Evening Standard (which made a big point out of the price of the Obamas' gift) and a long list of other British media. Not newsworthy, but news all the same!

I can't even imagine complaining about the quality a gift, but as "damian" pointed out, the rest of us aren't high society enough to know that that's how one is supposed to behave.  Duh!

Or perhaps Michelle Obama realizes that a world-wide recession is causing great pain for a great number of people and has scaled back her gift-buying accordingly.

Let's not forget the Obama's are very new at this whole politics thing. Not a lot of experience heading up our country. Except that of Joe Biden who has been referred to as a "gaffe machine". I guess it is not all that surprising to me. But hey we wanted change...

Well, Twyla, I guess if we had known there would be questionable children's gifts involved we wouldn't have wanted change at all. Damn! I'm so upset that I voted for him now.

Oh HONESTLY Twyla.  Bush lied us into two unwinnable wars and stood idly by while our financial system crashed and burned and you're bitching about Michelle's gift-buying choices?  Also, what Manjari said.
