Meet Octo-Mom's Male Equivalent: Dad Has 86 Kids

Posted by JeanneSager

If this the were story of a mom of eighty-six kids, I'd be calling for someone to help stuff that uterus back up in there and sending her my sympathies.

The fact that there's a man out there with eighty-six kids and more on the way just gives me the creeps.

Daad Abdul Rahamn, a resident of Dubai who is only sixty-three, claims to be the man who's fathered the most children in the world. And that's something he's proud of? Even creepier, Rahamn doesn't actually foot the bill for his family; his fertility has earned him the respect of the local sheikh, and the sheikh pays to keep the family going.

Rahamn has had a total of seventeen wives (four at a time are permissible in the United Arab Emirates), and says he's looking for more. So he can make more babies, we guess?

I know I'm going to get the response that I just don't understand a culture other than my own, but please, spare me. This man has eighty-six kids. There aren't enough hours in the day to spend quality time with each one, and he can't even afford them! If you think Nadya Suleman is off the charts crazy then I think you've got to lay even more disgust on the fertile feet of this man. He admits to paying the kids to leave the room - so he can spend more time with his wives.

With his declaration that he wants to get to one hundred kids by 2017, I'd say this guy looks at parenting as a contest, not a reality.

Does he bother you the way OctoMom gets under your skin?

I'm from Dubai, and rest assured, this situation has nothing to do with the culture of our country. While polygamy is indeed legal, many couples opt out, and it usually occurs in rural areas. For urbanized Dubai-ans, it's rare. Having said that, those who do engage in polygamy usually have a lot of kids.

I myself have 21 paternal aunts and uncles, because my grandfather had many wives (not at the same time mostly), and only have 4 maternal uncles. My paternal grandfather was traditional in that sense, and probably had a total of 11 wives. But even then, the kids were only 21. Not 86. My maternal granddad was more modernized, etc., that's why he only had one wife and 5 kids in total with her (which is a lot, compared to today's numbers).

The local sheikh probably paid for the kids, though I don't know the real reason. The rulers of this country engage in polygamy widely, and have many kids too. Total number of kids is under 15, usually. Unfortunate, but it's the truth.

This 86 kids thing is by far way too much, and not normal in Dubai standards at all. It's not a cultural issue; this man obviously views parenting as a contest, and is being very irresponsible with his actions.

Thanks Shamsa - I really didn't think this was reflective of the people of Dubai, but it's nice to get a native Dubai-an's perspective!

I'm sure there are men in every county of this country who would have that many wives/kids if it were permissible.  Or at least that many simultaneous sex partners - maybe not contractually bound ones.  I worked in HR for a time and had to garnish the wages of a man who had seventeen children by five women.  Not 86, but the guy was only in his twenties - give him some time.
