There's a New Kid in the Jolie/ Pitt Clan!

Posted by SunnyChanel

There’s a new kid in the Pitt /Jolie household. Her name is Amy and she is…imaginary.  Amy is 2-year-old Shiloh’s imaginary friend and, according to Star Magazine, she prefers her pretend pal Amy more than her young twin siblings Knox and Viv.   At dinner time Shiloh will push away her own plate of food after announcing that “Amy’s not hungry.”

According to a recent study, about two-thirds of school-age children have had an imaginary companion by the age of seven. According to an article on Science Daily “interacting with imaginary friends and impersonation – plays a role in child development, both cognitively and emotionally. This kind of activity allows children to manage social situations in a safe context, such as practicing how to handle conflict with something that may or may not talk back to them. Cognitively it helps them deal with abstract symbols and thought, which leads them to abstract thought about their own identity.”

But my question is, with so many kids in the house, does Shiloh really need to go to the imaginary realm for playmates?

Did you have imaginary friends growing up? And do your kids have one?

My daughter (3 yo) has an imaginary baby cow. Once in a while she will talk about some other imaginary friend but baby cow has been with us for over 6 months. Baby cow gets in all sorts of trouble and seems to get lots of time outs. Baby cow also has lots of adventures and opinions.

Its kind of cute. We don't live on a farm or anything but we do live near a bunch of ranches so she sees cows when we go out.

Not that I care one whit about Shiloh, but any kid in a busy house probably has more reason for an imaginary friend - someone she is in control of, who always has time for her, who plays the way she wants to play.

I was thinking what Larissa said - you probably need more space for yourself growing up in a crowded home.

My 3 yo has had two. One was a guy that he would hold in the palm of his hand and whisper to (he would whisper back), and recently its a full sized friend named "girl". They seem to always come out when he's being punished or not getting his way.
