New Tween Dora Revealed!

Posted by KeriF

When Mattel and Nickelodeon announced plans last month to introduce a new tween Dora, parents were afraid their daughters would lose the original Dora they had grown to love. And when her silhouette was revealed, that fear turned to outrage.

Big hair. Short skirt. Head seemingly proportionate to her body. How could this be Dora?

"She's a tramp!" was the typical response (okay, it was my response).

But now Dora is revealed in all her glory. Is she a tramp?

The miniskirt everyone thought she was wearing turned out to be a tunic worn over leggings. She seems modestly and appropriately dressed for a doll of her age, which is "approximately modeled after a nine- or ten-year-old," according to the press release. (Why so vague, Mattel? What is Dora trying to hide?)

I actually think this doll is a great idea. My niece, Hilary, who is almost six, loves Dora. She also loves Barney and the Teletubbies. But those aren't really appropriate shows for a six-year-old. Why should kids have to give up the characters they love just because they get a little older? Tween Dora will be perfect for Hilary, who will be thrilled that Dora is growing up just like Hilary.

Dora will be joined by the Explorer Girls, and the foursome will go on adventures just like little Dora, but with a greater purpose: organizing a beach clean-up, volunteering at Abuela's senior center, picketing in front of the local Planned Parenthood (okay, I made that last one up). She'll also solve mysteries with her friends and still teach Spanish words and phrases along the way.

And don't worry, little Dora isn't going anywhere.

What do you think? Should Dora stay in preschool or is tween Dora a good idea?

My husband and I actually talked about this yesterday... he called her "Dora the Whora" :-p I actually like it, though... I think the thing to keep in mind is that, you go stages in your life, especially when growing up. And, part of being a girl can be, for many, things like fashion and other things people might find "shallow."

I think it's a mistake to try and ban "girly" things from girls' childhoods. And, if you're going to let them indulge in things like this, I would much rather my daughters have this Dora doll, then one of the Bratz dolls (which are kinda whorish, I must say :-p).

I just think, to a certain extent, things like being interested in Barbies and fashion and make-up, etc. are natural. The trick is just to not let things like that take over and have them be the end all, be all of your little girl's life. But, as with anything, if you try to take it away altogether, you end up pushing kids exactly in the direction you were trying so hard to avoid... and I'd rather not end up with a couple of real Bratz :-p

Every nine or 10 year old I know is wearing the exact same outfit.  Maybe minus the rouge and mascara, but I think they nailed the look of older, cooler sister.

I think she is appropriately dressed, and is not another brats doll. But from what I understand, tween Dora and her friends will go on more shopping adventures than being involved in public service. I hope that this is not the case, and that this new, older Dora is not just a mindless consumer, but can encourage tweens (why don't we call them kids anymore)to be more active in their worlds.

I like that she will be part of the explorer's club.  That seems to be more in keeping with her.  I was afraid they'd make her a little fashionista rock star wannabe.
