Sasha's Not-So-Green Lunches

Posted by Madeline Holler

Michelle Obama has made healthy eating a priority for her family and for America. During the campaign, she made it clear organic foods were her first choice for daughters Sasha and Malia. Now in the White House, the First Family has a chef who specializes in local, organic ingredients. Recently, Michelle and a bunch of Washington, D.C., school kids grabbed their shovels and planted a White House vegetable garden.

So some have found it shocking that the youngest Obama doesn't always carry whole grain PB&J sandwiches and fresh fruit in her lunch. Friends have told nosey reporters that about three times a week Sasha pulls this out of her Jonas Brothers lunchbox:

Lunchables!

Yes, those overpackaged, high-calorie, low-nutrient premade lunches by Oscar-Meyer.

Sasha's classmate reports the second-grader usually has the Maxed Out Pepperoni, which includes a bottle of spring water and a packet of powdered Kool-Aid, or the Ham & American Stackers, which includes a bite-size Snickers bar. During freetime, the "friend" said Sasha likes to play on the Lunchables cartoon website.

Michelle has said the family isn't perfect and they just try to do their best, but Lunchables? Are we taxpayers footing the bill?

I'm sure they eat better once their home. If baby girl Obama wants to eat a lunchable, let her. I'm sure you ate crap all the time when you were a kid, if you didn't then you TOTALLY missed out! She's a kid! Let her eat her damn lunchable if she wants.

From what i can tell Michelle is doing a lot better than some people at raising her kids. A couple of lunchables isn't gonna change anything. Besides...wait is this an april fools joke? gah i hate this day i cant believe anything i read! (which is funny because i was about to say "besides you shouldnt believe everything you read")

lame.

I never really understood why I should care what someone else's kids are or aren't eating - celebrity culture just mystifies me.  I'm potentially interested in the example the Obamas set as parents (contrast with, say, the Nixons, where it was clear Richard couldn't have cared less about his wife, and could only have cared a little less about his girls) because so many people are paying attention, but yeesh. Who cares?

These are kids for god's sake! Have you no heart, woman! (And I'll have you know the lunchables web site has cut down on trans fats, so there!)

So, I am assuming this is a joke, right? The part about the website games almost seems a bit too commercial-ish. Anyway, as far as the bill, what I read was the president is required to buy thier own food. So, no we shouldn't be paying for any food for the family. However, lunchables are cheaper than most organic meals.

big deal. of course we want our children to eat as healthy as possible. but i would rather send something less nutritious that i know will get eaten than something organic and healthy that won't be touched.

Must be April Fool's.  The Obama's (like all USA First Families) pay for all of their own food.  The cooks prepare food for visitors, dignitaries, etc.  But the first family doesn't get a free ride for their normal day-to-day meals.
