Rocket Fuel Found in Baby Formula

Well if this isn't a craptacular study and accompanying news story that is only going to freak people out, I don't know what is. So apparently the Centers for Disease Control studied whether there is perchlorate -- often tied to rocket fuels -- in baby formula.

According to the CDC, yes -- yes there is. But they're not saying exactly how much or which brands.

And the study doesn't even say how dangerous this could be for kids. This news story says no tests have ever shwon the chemical to cause health problems, and yet -- perchlorate in high amounts is known to cause thyroid issues, which could impact metabolism and brain development, and the government makes companies put iodine in formula to counteract the effects.

So which is it? Harmful or not?

"This wasn't a study of health effects," said Dr. Joshua Schier, one of the authors.

Well, gee -- thanks.

Now you've got people wondering if there are harmful chemicals in their baby formula but they can't do anything about it. They can't switch brands, because which one is safe and which one is not? Are any safe at all? Or is this no big deal? They can't gauge whether they think it's an acceptable amount. They can only sit there, wondering -- is my baby going to blast off any time soon?

NOW is breastfeeding really not that important, Ms. Rosin?

geesh...

GP, don't be an asshole.  There are people who can't or choose not to breastfeed for a zillion reasons - that doesn't mean they should have to subject their kids to formula that's been poisoned.  Jeez.

Seriously, GP, wtf?  My husband and I spent a fortune on special equipment and lactation specialists and all for naught.  Because my daughter was physically unable to latch, did she deserve to drink unregulated poison?  This isn't about "breast is best," it's about protecting children, and surely that's something we should all be in favor of.

I need to double check this, but I am fairly sure that perchlorate has been found in breast milk, too, although they are not sure the vector- it is an environmental contaminant getting into women's systems and released in milk. So you can't win for losing.

Every half dozen years or so someone comes out that there's rocketfuel in breastmilk, too.  It's in the air and we breathe it in.

uhm, I'm not saying it shouldn't be regulated or that people deserve this shit...I am just saying that it *is* shit and that breastfeeding is better for lots of reasons...and people who try to rationalize that it's not better are just fooling themselves

yes, there should be an expectation of safety because formula (and other food products) are supposed to be regulated...sadly, they're not always so well-regulated

this just one reason why the smallest of the small and the youngest of the young ideally would be drinking only breast milk the first six months or so of their lives

yes, I feel sorry for people who can't BF

not so much for people who WON'T or who give up easy

all that said, we're exposed to all kinds of chemicals all the time in the modern world and these study results may very well be sensationalized...I don't know

I'm not sure if I am doing this right but here is a link to Dr. Sears website where he has a recipe for homemade formula.

www.askdrsears.com/.../t032401.asp

It uses goat's milk. Lots of chemicals are also found in breast milk. Nothing is ever going to be 100% safe. We as humans share a lot of space with chemicals and toxins.

hey GP- you do know that this chemical has also been found in breastmilk, right?

this article tells us nothing.

The old days were best, GP.  If you couldn't breastfeed your child - it died.  That way no big business made money by pretending its product was as good as breastmilk.

this isn't an issue as to whether or not breastmilk is better than formula because this contaminate is in the water, hence it is also in breastmilk.

this is an environmental issue and if people could just stop fighting about which is better boob or bottle, we might be able to actually discuss the bigger issue:

being able to feed our children (and ourselves) safely in all ways.

and because it's in the water, it's in all food.

all of us are eating "rocket fuel"

Marj...nobody wants anybody's baby to die...on the contrary! People give in too early on these issues. The vast majority of women can breastfeed, they just aren't given proper support or encouragement. I don't think formula is evil and I know some people HAVE to use it. However, this new underscores the fact that it is a man-made substance with the capacity for contamination. The same contaminants found in breastmilk are very likely miniscule.

At higher doses perchlorate and iodide SHARE immunotoxic effects because they are chaotropic (see iododerma, bromoderma, bromism), so increasing the dose of iodide in the infant formula is not likely to be the solution. Chaotropic anions keep proteins from coagulating and water from freezing -- thus the liquid water on Mars stays liquid at very cold temperatures because it contains large amounts of perchlorate. I personally think industrial exposures to perchlorate keep important parts of the innate immune system (pentraxin 3, defensins) from coagulating with pathogens, and thereby increase the incidence of CD34+ tumors (thyroid, connective tissue) due to mutation-promoting viruses (e.g. high incidence of malignant nerve sheath tumors around the Whittaker Bermite rocket plant in Santa Clarita CA.) If pendrin is the primary means of excreting perchlorate through the urine, then premature infants and babies with diarrhea will retain perchlorate.

Perchlorate in drinking water, and perchlorate-rich items like opuntia cactus (nopales) and chew tobacco, need to be regulated. http://www.perchlorate.org

Some parents have been known to pour ROCKET FUEL into their children's cuts!  In fact, until recently this was recommended practice!!

And perchlorate has also been found in breastmilk, as previous commenters mentioned:

I guess all three of my kids should be dead.

Then again, no one will ever understand how hard I tried or cried or worried that I wouldn't be a good enough mom because I couldn't.

After you women who think I'd didn't do enough finally wean your children, are they only gonna get to eat food that you have grown and/or slaughtered on your own???  Because, really, all the chemicals in the food we eat, and all the additives.  Why subject your children to that??? Oh wait, are you only eating fresh, home grown food now???  Are you sure the beef you ate last night is safe and organic??  Because you are putting that stuff directly into your child's body!!!  The only way to be SURE is to grow your own food.  And to raise your own livestock, because big business and farmers are all out for themselves and they want to poison our children!!!!  They lie!!!  And if you loved them enough, you'd do this!!!

What???  You CAN'T grow your own food, or raise your own cattle because you have to WORK to pay a house payment??  Well then MOVE!!!  I mean you really love your baby, you would try harder!!!!  EVERYONE should do this!!!!  Even if you can't, and you aren't the farming type.  or you don't have the money to buy a farm, because really, kids grow up and they deserve only the best!!!!  And you growing your own organic food and livestock is the ONLY way!!!!

I did what I could.  When you have the local chapter president of la leche telling you that you need to get some formula in that child's system NOW, you know things aren't working.....

So, say what you are going to about those of us who can't...

I'm willing to accept "good enough" for my children and trust that "big business" formula companies aren't out to poison my babies.  My boys are healthy and thriving (unless you are thinking their lack of breastmilk caused autism).

So, stick a sock in it.

GP,

This study looked at the levels of Perchlorate in cows' milk and breastmilk.  The level of Perchlorate in breastmilk was much higher than what was found in cows' milk.

This issue affects ALL of us - and headlines like the one above are really just attempts to add rocket fuel, so to speak, to the mommy wars.
