Multitasking Dad Uses Stroller for Baby, Shoplifting

Posted by KeriF

When Miguel Angel Rodriguez left the Hollywood Video store in East Greenbush, NY on Friday, he had more than just his 2-year-old step-daughter inside the stroller.

Apparently Rodriguez loaded the stroller with more than $1,000 worth of video games and tried to walk out of the store. A store employee called police and followed Rodriguez (and stroller) into Wal-Mart, where he tried to blend in with the crowd. The employee was dogged, however, and kept an eye on the perp until police arrived.

"Step-dad of the Year" Rodriguez was charged with attempted grand larceny and acting in a manner injurious to a child.

I must admit that I have had to be reminded on more than one occasion to pay for certain items in the basket of my stroller, having completely forgotten that I put them in there while dealing with the joy that is a screaming, poopy, cranky, tired, hungry baby. (And always while paying for items that were actually within my sight, like clothes hanging from the stroller handles or a potty seat precariously balanced across said handles.)

But $1,000 worth of video games? That's a lot to forget.

Perhaps we shouldn't rush to judgment. I know I've left stores with items I didn't pay for after my daughter snatched them into her stroller without me noticing. If only I could train her to go after video games instead of single earrings and such.

my daughter did that once, I usually give her toys as we walk through the store to keep her calm and in her seat. I know that if she gets too antsy I will have to take her out, and that means chasing her... not so much fun. Then before I get to the checkout I will take out the 5-10 toys we have accumulated (not in the right places, i bet the people that have to fix those things hate me). Once though I had planned to buy her one of the toys, it was a mouse that started shaking and squealing when you shake it, and it was on sale for like $2. Anyways, I went through the self checkout and forgot to go through the front of the cart too. I got out to the car and took her out, and the mouse fell out and then started to shriek and wiggle all over the parking lot... I ended up throwing it in the car and leaving.

I figured it made up for the time that I went with my sister and her bag got stolen 2 seconds after she checked out.
