Brand New National Children's Museum Plans Unveiled

Posted by SunnyChanel

I love taking my toddler to museums. But when checking out exhibits like the recent Chihuly show that came through my town, the cultural encounters are filled with more anxiety than art.  At moments like this, one very much welcomes an educational and age appropriate destination like a museum just for the kids. Today, new plans were just unveiled for a brand new National Children’s Museum near Washington D.C.. Which, when completed, the museum "will house exhibits, programs, and resources designed to spark the imagination and celebrate the power of children and their families"

The designs by Connecticut architect Cesar Pelli were unveiled today for a four-story building in Prince George’s County in Maryland. The Children’s Museum will feature a rooftop graden, a wall of living plants, a glass atrium, a wind turbine and reflective roof panels. This will fill the void of the Capital Children’s Museum that closed five years ago. The new museum is anticipated to open in 2013 but first the museum must raise about $180 million dollars ($7 million has been received by the state of Maryland).

While the building is in development, there will be a 2,700 space aptly named the NCM Launch Zone which will open this Saturday April 25th (112 Waterfront St.) This weekend (on the 25th and 26th from 11am-4pm)  there will be opening ceremonies and various events to celebrate the new project. So if you are in the DC area this weekend stop by and join the party.
