"Why Hide Miscarriage?"

by Christine Chitnis.

I told everyone about my pregnancy in the first trimester -- and when we lost the baby, I was glad everyone knew.

I lost my first pregnancy at 11 weeks...just after returning from telling the last of our friends about our pregnancy.  It was devastating for us, and having people know was hard.  I mean, it was nice that our friends could be there for us and that we didn't have to hide or explain our grief too often, but with the grapevine the way it is, we were having to talk to people about it for weeks afterward, and all our interactions ended up being about the loss.  I found it a relief whenever I ran into someone who didn't know, just so I wouldn't have to talk about how I was or think about it.

I think overall I'm glad people knew, but it did make it difficult.  The best thing that came of it, though, is that friends who have had miscarriages since have felt very comfortable coming to me, which is nice.

Must be nice for her. I told people about my two miscarriages in a row and we got lots of unsupportive comments and brushoffs. And this is from family and friends too. Nothing like being told your pain is "Not a big deal" or that "It is good your baby died because there was probably something wrong with it,"  or being told I should "Just be happy for SIL and her pregnancy that coincided with my lost pregnancy."  Love the support I got.

When I woke up from my D and C I heard the nurses bad mouthing me and all the doctors and nurses were acting pissed that I was not all smiles and giggles for them on the day I came in to have my second baby sucked out of me. Only my RE was supportive. The surgery center was full of a bunch of insensitive jerks.

I guess I just have shitty people in my life.
