Where Apple, Moses and Your Kids Like to Eat

Posted by Madeline Holler

Eating out with kids isn't always easy, even when you're Gwyneth Paltrow (though, come on, it has to be easier, right?). Either the restaurant you like doesn't like your kids, or the menu doesn't have any realistic options for your picky offspring.

Paltrow addresses the matter of kid-friendly yet adult-palate-satisfying restaurants in this week's issue of her online newsletter "GOOP." (If you don't yet get GOOP, you should. It only costs you bandwidth and you sometimes get little gems, such as this one, where she discusses her once "frenemy" who we all know is Winona Ryder.)

GOOP consists of a lot of lists, and this week's is no exception. She put together a guide of kid-friendly/Gwyneth-approved restaurants in Manhattan, Los Angeles, Chicago and London. What? You're nowhere near Manhattan, Los Angeles, Chicago or London? That's where you come in.

We've got readers from all over -- U.S., Canada, Australia, Japan, etc., etc. Here's your chance to give a shout-out to the restaurant you really, really like and where you can also bring your kid without (1) being made to feel bad and (2) having the nightly food battle. In  other words, some place they like too. Maybe you'll drum up extra biz and ensure you're favorite family dining spot won't go out of business. We're looking for non-national chain (if possible), delicious, maybe even healthful.

I'll start. I live in Long Beach, Calif., and while, technically, it's in the same county as Gwyneth's Los Angeles picks, I'm not hauling the kids to Santa Monica to go out to eat. But I'll keep her recommendations in mind if I'm ever tempted to do so.

In the meantime, we love going to La Parolaccia, which turns out is a mini-chain in the area. The food is delicious, they don't glare at you when you show up with kids and they even have a high-chair. Oh, and a bread basket with some kind of tapenade that must include heroin as a main ingredient because it's highly addictive and they keep refilling it even though they probably shouldn't. And for Mexican, we go to the Los Compadres on Anaheim St.. Not only is the food good and authentic, they send the waitresses over to take turns telling you how cute your baby is and then pass him around until everyone has had a chance to guess how much he weighs.

Your turn. Where do you take the kids in Minneapolis? Des Moines? Perth? Guelph? Arlington?

Tucson-Pancho Villa's on 4th Ave. They've had to call 911 for one of our kids, yet they still smile at us when we show up. And they've got tacos the whole family loves.

OK, I have to make one off-topic comment. I am kind of surprised you are suggesting that people subscribe to Goop. I tried checking it out a few times, but I thought my head was going to explode from all her nonsense. (Sorry to sound so harsh, stuff like this topic is OK, but she talks about so many things she clearly does not understand.)

Giovannis in Munster, Indiana....

Go there for lunch, it is easier on the pocketbook.  They serve awesome Italian food, and their hostess used to hold our newborn when he got fussy.  As our kids got older, they always made them feel welcome, (although we do tip well, clean up after ourselves and come only off peak--so it isn't like we were obnoxious)...

If you ever are in NW Indiana, it is the place to go.  And they have wonderful adult beverages too!!

I'm with you, gpgirl.  I'm sure Gwyneth is a lovely and sweet woman, but she come off as a ditz.

Okay, Arlington, Virginia, here we go!

Pietanza in the Lee-Harrison shopping center. Totally kid/family friendly and super good, brick-oven pizza.

Liberty Tavern on Wilson Blvd. Fancy-ish fare and it can be quite a scene on a weekend evening. BUT, even on such a night, the maitre d' gave us a large section in the loungey area (couches, low tables, etc.), which allowed our toddler plenty of room to wiggle without bothering anybody.

Cafe Asia, also on Wilson. Quite the hipster scene, but it's so loud that nobody minds if your kids are quiet or not. Plus, there's plenty of room in the new section in the back, so even if your toddler runs laps around the table the whole time you're wolfing down spicy tuna rolls, she won't disturb any fellow diners.

That's all that comes to mind now. Must mean we're not getting out enough.

Schooner's in Antioch, CA. They're a brew pub with homemade, awesome mac & cheese. I'd eat it, and I'm not 3. All of the food we've had there has been great.

In nearby Walnut Creek, I'd say lunch or an early dinner at Stanford's in Broadway Plaza. Very accommodating, great food, and great selections for the kids.

Ok, I live in the midwest, and EVERY place is "kid-friendly" (even the strip bars, I am sure)....but that means that there are no really kid oriented places.  When I visit my much cooler sister in Portland, there are so many nice kid friendly coffee shops where moms/dads can chill with the kid, let them run around and play while mama sips a latte and pretends she is having time away from the kids.  Kansas?  Nope.  Being a mom here is not cool, it is just what everyone does.  Dangit.

I am with gpgirl all the way. Reading GOOP was hard on my brain. Her writing blows. And I can't get past it.

I know Gwenyth already covered Chicago, but none of the restaurants on that list looked remotely do-able to me, perhaps because my elder son is only 2.5 and younger is 1.5. I'd like to add the Curio Cafe, on Lawndale and Roscoe off the Kennedy's Addison exit. The coffee at least is fair trade, and I think that the food (or some of it) is organic. They serve breakfast and lunch, dinners on Fri and Sat. The service is maybe a bit on the slow side, but it is family-owned and friendly. There is a whole area with a long table and little chairs for the kids, with a toy kitchen, toys, books and a chalkboard. We can hang out there for an hour and a half and my kids still don't want to leave. Love the chocolate crepes! Pancakes for the kids, Plato Tipico (plantain, eggs, avocado, cheese, black beans) for me.
