Unsurprisingly, Barack has moved way up the list of popular baby names this year, ranking as the 2,409th most common name, up from 12,535 in 2007. Perhaps also not surprisingly, the popular prez still has nothing on the world’s sexiest soccer star.
Unlike Barack, Beckham made the list of 1,000 most popular baby names this year, ranking 893. This does not have encouraging implications about our national priorities.
In general, naming kids after living celebrities—even very admirable celebrities—has never made a lot of sense to me. Why would you want perfect strangers to immediately associate your kid with someone they see on TV everyday? Even if the association is positive, I would never want my name to immediately bring to mind a fixed personality that has nothing to do with me.
Unfortunately, the rise of Hannah Montana has meant that I’m forced to have this experience to some extent—but at least I don’t blame my parents.
