Federal Agent* Seizes Oat-Based Contraband

Posted by Madeline Holler

By now you know that the Food and Drug Administration has deemed Cheerios, that favorite O-shaped toddler snackfood, a drug. Big time!

General Mills' claim that the pincher-grasp fortifying num-nums also lower cholesterol "4 percent" puts it in the drug category. The company must, therefore, submit to testing and apply for approval before it can be sold.

So what of that box sitting on top of the fridge? As this family learned, look out for federal agents.

Cheerios. Total gateway to the hard stuff -- Cocoa Pebbles, Cookie Crisp, trail mix with chocolate chips.

* Or not.

If General Mills has a cereal that can be deemed a drug it sure isn't Cheerios.

I've probably scooped out 50 pounds of sugar over my lifetime just to give my Cheerios a little flavor.

The cereal has done more for sugar and banana consumption in this country than any other.

I think that it serves General Mills right for their possibly misleading advertising.  No company should be able to make claims liket that without some sort of proof.  Because let's face it, there are a lot of people out there that do not realize that in the U.S. most companies can make just about any claim they want about their product.  It is nice to see the FDA actually doing something.

This is pretty funny, just because it seems so ridiculous. I don't know, Shana, I would say that clearly the FDA doesn't have enough to do if they're going after Cheerios. And if people are eating three bowls of Cheerios a day to lower their cholesterol because they believe what they read on an advertisement?...Well, worse things have happened.

ChiLaura, I hear you - but I think the FDA does have enough to do and probably too much - I just wish they were busy doing it, like, for example, making sure clinical trial data isn't falsified or purchased and that adverse reactions to drugs aren't hidden, before they go out and approve them for sale to all of us!
