I can only handle so many tragic medical stories involving kids in one week.
After the eight-year-old with ovarian cancer and the ten-year-old with breast cancer, I'd say Strollerderby has given you your quota this week. But this is a story you might want to read anyway.
Because six-year-old Bethany Jordan has the biggest grin I've seen on any kid.
They call her the Jigsaw Kid because she's "been pieced together" differently than anyone else, the markers of the rare Ivemark Syndrome which she was born with. She has five spleens and two left lungs. You can see her heart beat through the skin of her back, and her stomach is on the wrong side. Her heart had a hole in it when she was born, and her liver was backward.
OK, enough with the bad stuff.
Doctors thought she'd have Down Syndrome. She doesn't. They thought she'd be brain damaged. She isn't. They thought she'd never survive the birth. She's now six.
And just look at that cheese.
What's that they say about lemons and lemonade? I'll be sipping on this one all Memorial Day weekend.
