Dad Gets 100 Years for Poisoning Campbell's Soup

Posted by JeanneSager

There is nothing Mmm, mmm, good about this Campbell's Soup story. Although, to be fair, it's not the soup company's fault.

A father decided he was so money hungry, he wanted to sue the Campbell's Soup Company. But instead of sticking a worm in his can of chicken noodle and crying foul, William Cunningham figured he'd go for the big kahuna.

He cooked up soup with prescription medicines and lighter fluid and fed it to his kids.

The good news? The children - eighteen months and three-years-old at the time - survived.

The just as good news? Cunningham's butt is headed to prison, NEVER to see the light of day. Convicted on multiple counts of cruelty to children and aggravated assault (he already pled guilty for trying to defraud Campbell's), the Georgia man will spend one hundred years (or at least as long as he lives) in prison. He's also lost his wife (go figure), and he won't be seeing the kids - who are likely to suffer lifelong respiratory problems despite their survival.

We all know people get desperate for cash, but is there ever a time when you'd put your child's life at risk to get it? Obviously, Cunningham went farther than a normal person. I'm not suggesting poison. But let's look at the parents who take their children along for the ride when they're off to sell drugs, rob a store . . . basically, the type of crime that someone slightly more sane (although still on a criminal bent, obviously!) might commit. They're affecting the child, risking the child's life but certainly not feeding their child a mix that could very likely kill them.

Some would even say that the Nadya Sulemans and Jon and Kate Gosselins of the world are doing something fairly similar. Not feeding their kids poison, but risking their emotional health for the sake of the cash.

What is it about these parents that allows them to treat the child as a pawn who they can do with what they please?

How does John & Kate and Nadya Sulemans fit in to that? Seriously, there are lots of children who grew up in big families and lots of famous children, you're just one of those people who like to put down others to make yourself feel better. They are in no way as bad as someone who takes their child on a killing/robbing spree or tries to poison them! Where do you get off?

This mans behavior is disgusting, but I agree with des. Comparing John & Kate and Nadya Suleman to this monster is over the top. Whatever their reasons are for doing what they like with their family is their business. You passing judgment on the hypothetical and assumed ("risking their emotional health") on YOUR part is irresponsible - especially with such a vast number of readers. You're breeding hate and ignorance.

It seems to me that you are right, Jeanne.  Those of us who focus our lives on the old greenback, all to often risk our children's emotional health, or we exaggerate future mental health issues that might not have been a problem if we had just asked ourselves; "Does my little one need me worse than she needs a CEO, (or a web star)?"

If you're saying you think a parent should be a parent first, and not a cash generating machine, I'll vote for you.

This guy is a straight up mentally deficient redneck who thought no one would notice his kids had gone to the ER poisoned twice before while in his care.  The real outrage is although nurses reported the poisoning the first two time those kids were released to him!  It took the baby almost dying to get them removed from his custody.  The baby will have lifetime physical issues as a result of his deeds and the inaction of the law enforcement.  Grrrrr!

Neel,

It must be nice not to have to work to feed, clothe and house your children.  Some of us have to work though and if I'm going to spend 40+ hours a week working, I'm going to do it for the most money I can get for those hours.  Seems to me that Suleman and the Gosselins, didn't have many other choices with respect to jobs that made enough money to provide for large families.  Most people with families that big probably would have both parents working two or three jobs, if they could find them in this economy.  If I were them, i'd be deeply offended by being compared to this homicidal nutjob.
