Adult Music For Little Kids: Get Over It

Posted by JeanneSager

When we get in the car, my daughter puts in her musical requests. "The Rolling Stones, please!" Yes, she's three (almost four), and she loves her some Mick and Keith.

The quota of "adult" music to kiddie tunes in her section of my iPod is an almost two to one ratio. Just because they're kids doesn't mean they have to listen to inane bouncing around nonsense, right? Right?

Well, sort of. Because "adult" music is not always the kind you want your kids singing on YouTube.  But for all the ickiness of tots twirling their hair and singing Lady GaGa's Poker Face on Hannah's post last week on Strollerderby, one commentor made a good point: "You think 9 year olds understand the meaning of the lyrics?"

Because I hadn't a clue when I was a kid that Mick was "running to the shelter of" a Xanax. Knowing it now, and realizing I used to run around the house singing it, proves that no innocence was lost. I didn't grow up to be a pill head. Nor do I have some sort of problem with hearing voices after choosing Laura Brannigan's "Gloria" as my favorite tune when I was a kid and then naming half of my dolls in honor of the paranoid pop song.

Maybe I'm slightly defensive here - after all, while reading Hannah's post on Lady GaGa, I realized my daughter had walked into the room and was singing along (and I honestly couldn't tell you WHERE she'd heard the song before). But she's three. And just thinks "muh, muh, muh, mah" is really cool to say.

Kind of like "let me please introduce myself" at high Mick quality volume. We're just listening to music. We don't have to get into WHY Keith Richards looks so pickled and never pull up the Annie Liebowitz pictures of Jagger on tour.

We have limits - no Notorious BIG (and no, she didn't get to watch the movie with us either), no matter how much fun is to say "uh." Because, in the immortal words of Mick, "you don't always get what you want . . .but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need!"

What "adult" songs do your kids ask for by name?

My Humps...har har, just kidding. I think the only "adult" song the toddler has asked for by name is "Changes" by David Bowie.

I suspect the line will be drawn with "could it be double entendre" vs. "outright tawdry".  I really don't relish the thought of my child singing the chorus to Britney's "If you seek Amy" (well, any BS, but that's because I find her devoid of musical talent personally) as I don't want my child singing "all the girls and all of the boys want to eff you cee kay me".  That's no double entendre.  Kind of like my parents saw no reason for me to listen to 2 Live Crew chirping that they were so horny.

I grew up on a relatively steady diet of Hendrix, The Doors, Stones, etc...and the reality of the lyrics didn't dawn on me til I hit double digits, age-wise.

Beatles, Beatles, Beatles

Kids love the songs and you don't have to worry about the lyrics, at least with the early stuff. (up until Magical Mystery Tour era.)My 3 year old sings along and its actually cute hearing "I wanna hold your hand..."

Both of mine love "Iron Man," anything by The Ramones, "Everybody Get Dangerous" by Weezer, anything from the Star Wars soundtrack (to the point where they recognize John Williams's scores on other movies), and recently, the entire "School's Out" album by Alice Cooper.

Except for the oldest, who rocks out to the "Yeah Yeah Yeahs," they both despise "girl music" (ie. anything with a female singer).

I'm not sure why people freak out so much about adult music vs. kids music.  As long as there aren't a lot of bad words, I'd say it's just music.  Like most things in the environment people try to make it appropriate for kids, but the kids don't make the decision.  I mean, do you let them choose the color to paint your living room?  Do they get to choose the family car?  Why would I let them choose what music I listen to?  If I had to hear The Wheels on the Bus over and over and over, I'd have a nervous breakdown.

In our house the Rolling Stones are what Grammy and Grandpa listen to!  My youngest calls Led Zeppelin

old timey music".  They all seem to prefer classical, Natasha Atlas, Asian and world music.  They love the dance beats of Atlas!

How about some metal? Not talking about those wimpy 80's hair bands either. We're talking Corrosion of Conformity, Anthrax, Clutch, through in some Fugazi for a little punk, etc etc. My 2 yr old son prefers anything fast and loud and don't dare change the song to "kiddie" music. Hubby even has him playing air guitar.

I never listened to "kid music" when I was little like they have today. I see no reason to shelter my kids from the world, and they will probably just listen to what I listen to once they are old enough to care/ sing along

My kids like Bon Jovi and Def Leppard.  I know this b/c we listened to clock radios in a hotel room once and they wanted to stick with that channel.  None of that in my CDs or iPod!

They don't listen to a lot of adult music but I am fully aware that this is more for my comfort than theirs.  Apparently I used to sing, "Skyrockets in flight, afternoon delight!" in the grocery store.  While I am a fan of the occasional nooner, it wasn't a particularly corrupting influence in my life.

What I like about kid music is the variety of subject matter for the songs - bugs, baseball, food, dancing, seasons, counting, etc.  Some of it is inane and annoying but much of it is interesting and relevant to my kids' lives.

My daughter asks for "Chinese," by Lily Allen, and "Roll to Me," by Del Amitri.  She also asks for old-school NKOTB, but that hardly counts as adult!
