Five-Year Old Saves Toddler from Drowning

Posted by Shannon LC Cate

Five-year old Riley Braden has been swimming since she was two.  A few weeks ago, her skills paid off in a big way.  When Riley was swimming with some friends in a hotel pool, she noticed an 18-month old child in distress.  As Riley describes it:

"She didn't have her floaties on and her parents weren't watching.  I saved her. I dashed and I pushed off the wall with my feet and went down and got her."

A witness said Riley appeared on the surface with the child in her arms, declaring "I've got the baby!"  She returned the child to her parents who were visiting from out of town.

Riley, who will be six next week, isn't sure what she wants for her birthday.  But if I was that toddler's mother, I'd buy her a pony.  Or two!

Wonderful day brightener.  What a fabulous child with an incredible presence of mind at such a young age!  I agree about the ponies!  Baby's parents might need to do a little reflecting on pool safety, tho.

Something similar happened when my sister was little, she wandered into a pool when my mother was looking for her water wings. My dad ended up pulling her out.

Wow, five years old and already a hero!

I just can't understand leaving an 18-month-old unattended in a pool.  Granted, my daughter is autistic and needs to be watched every single second she's near water, but even if I had an NT toddler I wouldn't leave her alone in a swimming pool.  Or a wading pool.  Or a puddle...

Wow. I really need to sign my kids up for swim lessons at the Y!

Knitty, I'm trying to remember if it was on babble or elsewhere that I saw a post commenting on the fact that the more adults there are around, the more dangerous it can actually be for a child. While the adults assume safety in numbers, no single person is actually responsible for the child. I don't know if that applies to the situation here (it seems that the water was over the 18 m/o's head?), but that really gives some insight into how things can go so wrong even with two or more adults present. I will be a hawk at the kiddie pool this summer!

If you find that please post it, but the more I think about it the more sense it makes.  When I'm around my extended family there's about a 5:1 ratio of adults to little kids, so some of the parents seem to assume that another adult is watching their child and wander off, get distracted, et.  I don't, because of our circumstances, but I can understand how they see it.

My first thought was that this was probably a case of mom assuming dad was watching and dad assuming mom was watching.

Like others have mentioned there is oft a false sense of security when a lot of adults are around.  I think instead of judging the parents we all need to take this as a reminder to review summer safety with our kids and partner.
