• Political Nanny: Assassination Election

  Political Nanny's apologies for letting her Hillary get a bit wild over the long weekend. Seems Hil was gunning off a bit at the mouth mentioning -- yet again! -- something about how she's sticking around, you know, just in case Barack gets assassinated. (Big of you Hillary, but we're all freaking out a little when you say that.) Here's the money quote (via HuffPo): "My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don't understand it," she said, dismissing calls to drop out. She was presenting arguments for why she was staying in the race, despite the odds against her actually getting the nomination. Wonder why she didn't stick with more plausible reasons like, ummmm ... Still. Assassination? In fairness, she has since apologized to the Kennedys. (But the rest of us are still freaked out.) Somewhat surprisingly, this isn't the first time she's made this comment. Feeling threatened with no longer being the most outrageous fear-mongers, a Fox News pundit returned fire with this sharpshooter of a sentiment: the assassination of Obama would be hi-LAR-ious. • Father in Iraq Calls Son During Class. Son Suspended.

  Schools these days have plenty to worry about, the least of which is text messaging and cell phone calls.  So this tale of a high school boy being suspended for taking a call from his father, stationed in Iraq, is sympathetic and troubling. I feel for teachers, charged as they are with teaching kids with attention deficit disorder (among other things), kids with no manners, who are illiterate, violent, or worse...   Read More... • Weekly Check-Up: Eating Disorders On the Rise In Young Kids

  With all the news about the rise in childhood obesity and how we have to do something about it, it's interesting to see coverage of another topic: Increasing numbers of elementary school-aged children may be developing eating disorders. An eating disorder treatment center reported a 300 percent increase in calls for pre-teen patients. Oh, and get this: 80 percent of preteen girls are dieting. WTF? Dieting is linked with an increased liklihood of developing an eating disorder, which makes sense, cuz it's often just a matter of crossing a line a few too many times. • Bad Advice in the News? Is Using Retin-A For Stretch Marks Risky During Pregnancy?

  I saw this article from Fox News on preventing stretch marks, and paused for a second. Tip number one is, "Using Retin A Cream (vitamin A) at the inception of pregnancy, a weight-building program or a growth spurt is essential to keep the skin hydrated and moisturized." Now, I sort of remembered that Retin-A was not supposed to be used during pregnancy because of a risk of birth defects. So I went to the internet and poked around for reliable information. (Here's my love-hate with the internet. I adore having easy access to so much information, but sometimes you find everyone quoting some study and it turns out it was done on stuffed animals by a guy named Hal in his basement.) • Is Breast Milk the Next Diet Fad?

  In their infinite wisdom, the folks over at Fox News has published an article discussing how Japanese researchers have discovered that lactoferrin, a protein found in body fluids may cut visceral fat by as much as 40 percent and could help prevent the risks of heart disease and type-2 diabetes. The richest source of lactoferrin?  Human breast millk (or colostrum.) Could this be a huge breakthrough in dieting news?  Well, don't start sucking on those lactating breasts so quickly, my friends. What the brainiacs over at Fox News failed to realize was that the only news source publishing the research was a sleazy Japanese adult magazine Asahi Geino! The article about the breat milk diet was probably situated next to a report about used panty vending machines.  Kudos to Fox News for their amazing due diligence!  This reminds me of the time when I was at Berkeley and got into a debate with a buddy about the Persian Gulf War and he started spouting some surprising statistics.
