  • What is Everybody's Problem with Gay Foster Parents?

arkansasAccording to The Morning News: The Christian conservative group that successfully led the drive for Arkansas’ constitutional amendment banning gay marriage will push for a ballot initiative to limit who can adopt or foster children in the state.

Are you frigging kidding me? I guess these people didn't read this post. I don't get it. Kids that live in orphanages need foster parents. Who cares who they are sleeping with. Being gay does not make a person a pedophile. It doesn't make them morally corrupt. It does make it more difficult to have a child biologically. So what the hell? Same sex couples and adoption or foster care are a match made in heaven. These kids need parents and these parents need kids.

You don't have to be in total agreement with a person's belief structure to know that they could provide a good home for a child who needs one. I think that putting plugs in your ears to make really big ear holes is crazy, but I don't have a problem with somebody who has those adopting a child.

What I am trying to say is take it easy Arkansas. If you vote against GLBT parents being able to take in foster children or adopting you had better take in some yourself. Somebody needs to.

  • What Happens to Kids with Gay Parents?

gay parentsI'll tell you what happens to kids with a gay parent or gay parents. I won't even make you skip to the end of this post to find out. They end up exactly like the rest of us. My roommate freshman year in college had (well still has) a gay father. He was just like all the other dads. He called to see how school was, he came up to visit, he took us to dinner and he loved his daughter.

I have other friends with gay parents. I have gay friends that are parents. I can tell you this, most of them don't parent any different than my straight friends. It doesn't matter if their children are from a previous marriage, IVF, adopted or surrogate. Who you sleep with doesn't have any effect on how much you love your kid.

Although there is research being done to find out if there are biological factors that can influence a persons sexual orientation there is no conclusive proof that a child raised by one or more homosexual parents is more likely to be gay themselves.

  • Kids With Same Sex Parents Doing at Least as Well as Kids of Breeders

lesbian momIn your face, homophobes. A study requested by the Canadian Justice Department found that children of same-sex parents were at least as well-adjusted as children of heterosexual parents. The study reviewed all the empirical literature on the subject, and concluded that the majority of researchers discovered at least comparable levels of social competence in kids from gay and straight families. Oh, except a few studies did find that kids with lesbian parents have higher levels of social competence than kids with different-sex parents. Kind of makes you think that if we want to improve the prospects for our nation's children, we ought to do more to prevent discrimination against gay parents in adoption and foster parenting...

Interestingly, this study was concluded a while back, but when it was commissioned in 2003, the Canadian government was more liberal. When the conservative government came to power in 2006, they might not have wanted their own Justice Department concluding that gay parents do at least as good a job as breeders, if not better. At least that's the opinion of the study's author, who only got this work out into the world by making a request through the Access to Information Act.

I'm really no expert on Canadian politics, but I will say: boy, doesn't it suck when you keep opposing gay marriage, and then it turns out kids from gay families are doing quite well?  Why, it's almost as though there's nothing wrong with homosexuality. And remember, these kids are doing well despite the fact that they may have to contend with homophobia. It also sounds like the Canadian government prefers to keep anything that contradicts their ideological stance under wraps. Lemme tell you, we here in the States know nothing about that. As one lesbian mom interviewed for the story said, "I think if we were living in the United States, [the study] would not have even been done." Our government knows the best way to avoid embarrassing research is not to commission it in the first place.

  • Dick Cheney's Gay Daughter Expecting a Boy

mary cheney heather poeVice President Dick Cheney announced recently that his daughter and her partner are expecting a boy. (We first told you about the pregnancy in December.) Mary Cheney, 38, and her partner Heather Poe, 45, have been together since their college days and this is their first child.

Of the legal standing regarding his daughter's relationship with Poe, Vice President Cheney says:

I think each state ought to have the capacity to decide how they want to handle those issues... And I obviously think it's important for us as a society to be tolerant and respectful of whatever arrangements people enter into.

For the record, Mary Cheney is in favor of legalized same-sex marriage. The man her father controls reports to is not.
