Morning News: McCain Takes Aim at Obama's Fancy 'Copter

At yesterday's Fiscal Responsibility Summit -- attended by the President and high-ranking Congress members, not free-spending teens and their pursed-lipped mothers as the name might suggest -- John McCain scolded Obama for an expensive fleet of helicopters that could soon be at the president's disposal. "Your helicopter is now going to cost as much as Air Force One," the Arizona Senator said to his former rival, who basically said, "yeah, I don't think I need them either." NB: the helicopters were ordered during the Bush administration.

Obama's response should only endear him further to a large number of Americans.

Morning News: McCain Not an Adulterer, Still Not Tech Savvy

The New York Times has settled a lawsuit with Vicki Iseman, the blond lobbyist who looked a lot like Cindy that the paper all but claimed John McCain was having an affair with. There was a lot of outrage after the story ran in February and the claims that his relationship with her posed a conflict of interest never gained traction. Though no money changed hands in the suit -- which the Times is quick to point out -- both sides are claiming victory. The Times has given Iseman's lawyers space on the paper's website to make a statement.

But McCain's daughter is not letting her father -- or the GOP -- off so easily.

Sarah Palin Speaks To Esquire About Kids And Things

Sarah Palin is back. In truth, the Hockey Mom/Lipsticked Pitbull/former Vice-Presidential candidate never left. So before anyone hits me with a "Why don't you leave that nice woman alone!", remember that all of these quotes are from Palin herself, via an interview in Esquire Magazine. The New State of Children's Health Care

Soon after President Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law, the newly empowered Democratic Congress has once again signaled their commitment to what they’re calling “women and children first.” The Senate voted 66-to-32 to expand the State Children's Health Insurance Program to cover four million currently uninsured children by 2013. A tobacco tax will be used to pay for the increase in the federal program.

Parents Ripped Off On Inauguration Trip?

If New Jersey students had wanted to be in a tunnel, they could have stayed home. (Note: it is possible that no one in the Purple Tunnel of Doom was a student from New Jersey.)

It wasn't all fun and games (and hope – let's not forget hope) at the Inauguration of Barack Obama on January 20, 2009.

Congressional Youth Leadership Council organized trips to our nation's capitol for 15,000 students at a rate of $2500 for five-days. 1,000 of those students were from New Jersey, and some of their parents are mighty peeved that their young'uns didn't get a good view of all the Obama-mania.

McCain's Fashionista Daughter on Michelle's Dress, Why Obama Will Soon Be Uncool

I'm always a little more interested in the story of a contest's losing side than the winner's. Which is why on Nov. 5, before firing up all my usual online news sources to see the Obamas, I made my first stop here, the blog John McCain's daughter Meghan kept of her father's campaign.

Yet, there was nothing.

In fact, it took her next to forever to update her readers post-election.

Bronx Students Question Obama Through Poetry

It's one thing when Rush Limbaugh attacks the idea that Obama is going to bring "change" to our country. Of course Limbaugh doesn't want change – as far as he's concerned, everything is fine. But it's a little different when high school students from the Bronx wonder whether or not our new President is really going to be all that different from those who held the office before he did.

These kids are a little bit older than those we usually talk about on Babble, but this video kept my attention from beginning to end. The poetry the students recite is pretty raw; to put it mildly, this isn't exactly Robert Frost territory:

Morning News – Drunken Jokers With Bionic Limbs And Flying Cars

Happy Friday, everyone!

Comments on yesterday's Morning News got pretty heated. I considered doing nothing but stories about puppies, rainbows and sunshine today, but decided that was no fun. And as it turns out, the "Crossfire"-esque commenting has morphed into an interesting back and forth between persons of differing political persuasions. Thank you to everyone from both sides of the aisle who weighed in; check out the debate here.

Sasha and Malia Beanie Baby Dolls

These Beanie Babies are named Sasha and Malia - but its just a coincidence. Riiiiight.

Here's a good one. Ty Inc., maker of the once-insanely popular Beanie Babies, has introduced two new Beanies – Sweet Sasha and Marvelous Malia.

The good part? The company claims it's just a coincidence. Company spokeswoman Tania Lundeen says the names were chosen because they are "beautiful," according to US Weekly.

Do you buy it? I don't.

Sarah Palin Says Leave My Kids Alone

Sarah Palin says

Remember Sarah Palin? Republican Vice-Presidential candidate, kind of overshadowed John McCain for a while, said the word "maverick" a lot? Tina Fey did an impression of her on Saturday Night Live? Ring any bells?

She's back. Well, to be fair, she never went away. But the Associated Press has published a story talking about how Palin "is going on the offensive against news organizations as well as bloggers she says are perpetuating malicious gossip about her and her children." They say she has, "personally reached out to media outlets such as People magazine and The Associated Press to complain about information she claimed is wrong."

Sasha and Malia Get Bored

One of the things I've grown to like about the Obamas is that I find them relatable as a family. Barack and Michelle take the kids to school in the morning. They appear to be involved in their daughter's lives in a positive way. The girls give their dad a hard time. It's very sweet.

Adding to their overall normalness, Sasha and Malia got bored at the HBO Concert on Sunday. From NYMag.com:

Legoland California (the Lego theme park) has created a full Lego version of the Inauguration Ceremonies, complete with Lego versions of various folks, including outgoing President George W. Bush and his wife Laura, the Cheneys, and of course, Barack and Michelle Obama.

Inauguration Coverage Information

Like most people I plan to watch the Inauguration tomorrow (or today, depending on when you are reading this). The thing is, I don't feel like watching the build-up. (Think of it like the Super Bowl – the game is more important than the people talking about the game for hours on end. The Inauguration is more important, of course, although Arizona Cardinals fans might disagree. But I digress.) I realized that I didn't know exactly what time the swearing-in ceremony was. It wasn't too tough to find, but I wanted to share the information with our readers, along with a couple of other tidbits that I thought you might find interesting.

Linda Ellerbee Says Kids Should Skip School To Watch Inauguration

ParentDish spoke to Linda Ellerbee of Nick News about this Tuesday's swearing in of President Barack Obama. (You may have heard of it. It was in all the papers.) Ellerbee tells AOL's parenting hub that parents should, "Keep the kids home from school, spread out some yummies and settle in to watch the peaceful transfer of power from one opposing party to another… Missing school to stay home and watch the parades and the swearing in is just as good or better than any history or civics lesson your kids might get in the classroom that day."

Man, do I disagree with that.

I want Bruce Lansky's job. I mean, the guy just sits around all day and talks about names. Not even deep etymological studies, although sometimes he goes there. It's really just baby names. As near as I can tell, this is a way to make a living. America is a wonderful country.

Morning News: Bush Acknowledges Crappy Presidency ... Yet Leaving With Head Held High

Last night in an interview with ABC's Charlie Gibson, the man who is barely still president (big sigh of relief) owned up to a few of his failures as president. He said the Iraq war exceeded his expectations (and not in a good way) and that he was unprepared for war. He also took a bit of the blame for John McCain's election loss. The biggest regret of his presidency?

Morning News: Stevens Loses; Senate Dems Now at 58

Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, the guy who risked it all for a free grill, a back massager and a new deck, has lost his bid for re-election. Stevens, who likely would have won handily, had it not been for those pesky election year felony charges, lost narrowing to Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich. All of this adds up to nearly enough Democrats for a filibuster-proof Senate and a nightmare scenario for Republicans.

Oh, and Stevens will also likely seek a presidential pardon. (Of course, he is. Come on, George ... do one courageous thing before you leave office and tell him to serve his time.)
