Of those millions of shots jabbed into your squealing
infant’s chubby thigh, Prevnar was likely one of them. The vaccine prevents
pneumonia, meningitis and some kinds of ear infections in children. Now Prevnar is being
blamed for a new superbug virus found in nine Rochester, N.Y., children whose ear
infections have so far resisted all other drugs approved for treatment.
The shot, which came out in 2000 and was
originally
formulated to prevent seven of the 90 virus strains that cause ear
infections, has
been so successful in its fight that it has lost some of its
effectiveness. Strains that hadn’t before been covered have started to
flourish.
