Kristen Chase, Motherhood Uncensored, has a new column over at Imperfect Parent called "Mominatrix: No More Mrs. Nice Mom" and as you'll quickly see, if you go over and check it out, it's a hoot.
Her opening sally is a shot across the bow of traditional notions of mommies and their thoughts. In "What Lies Beneath" she ponders what really goes on in all the suburban parental bedrooms in America. Are the maternal frustrations she sees at the mall channeled into wicked goodness after dark? Swinging, perhaps?
I call this genre "Mommy Escapism" and I think it is a fabulous sign of the times. This column will most likely ruffle a few feathers (and boas?) for the same reason all the other parent writers/bloggers do, but also because of Jesus. Ever since the Virgin Birth, mothers have been de-sexualized and sanitized. Mominatrix will hopefully continue to challenge the deep-seated Virgin/Whore dualities in our culture. And while I wouldn't recommend "Why Mommy Likes S&M" books for young children, the whole concept of Mominatrix makes me feel happy and hopeful.
