For several months I attended a support group for women in or
recovering from abusive relationships. It's the kind of thing you never
expect to find yourself attending, yet once you do you wonder why you
waited so long.
There was a girl there in her very early
twenties, who had left a relationship that began when she was 14. As
the weeks went on I heard her matter-of-factly relate stories that I
found appalling in their honesty and brutality, and the overall theme
seemed to be that the majority of the physical and emotional abuse she
withstood took place on the grounds of the high school they attended.
