• New Study Shows You Can Get Knocked Up When You Least Expect It

  A new study has found what many of those who stared at the home pregnancy test in horror already knew: There's a big ol' window when you can get pregnant. People were previously told that the fertility window for trying to concieve (or trying not to conceive) was between days 10 and 17 of a woman's cycle. But guess what? Turns out that was only true for 30 percent of women. "In fact, the researchers found, there is hardly a day in the menstrual cycle during which some women are not potentially fertile." Ooops! • Washington State May Prohibit Abstinence-Only Sex Ed

  News from the state of Washington: a bill that prohibits schools from implementing sex ed programs that teach only abstinence is making the rounds through the state legislature. Over at The Stranger, expectations are high that the bill will make it through the House; the state Senate poses a bigger challenge.      What's interesting about this bill is the wording. First, the bill does require schools to include abstinence discussions in sex ed curricula. Like I said in a previous post, not a bad idea. More important is this: per the bill, sex education courses must be medically and scientifically accurate. Seems that it goes without saying that what we teach our kids should be at least somewhat true, but when it comes to sex ed, that's not always the case. In fact, some of the "facts" that have been taught in abstinence-only courses sound suspiciously like sound bites from Rick Santorum's campaign speeches. In my mind, such blatant fabrications as the ones in that Post article are more than the moronic ravings of an addled mind. Such tripe is a deliberate attempt to politicize sex education programs, pushing a right wing agenda onto kids (and in "Doctor" Frist's case, adults) who'll believe anything an authority figure tells them. The attempt in Washington to pass a bill that mandates fact-based sex ed is important; hopefully it'll become law. • Monkey Business: Vasectomies Don't Always Work

  Alarming men - and women -  everywhere, who are counting on that vasectomy to actually work, is the story of Teresa, a wild-born chimpanzee living out her golden years at a chimp sanctuary in Shreveport, LA.  Teresa, who is in her 40's, just delivered a healthy baby girl,  named Tracy, despite the fact  that all her male companions at the sanctuary have had vasectomies.  Managers at Chimp Haven noticed that Teresa was missing when they made their morning rounds one day last week, and said that when she reappeared that afternoon, she was holding a baby in her arms.  Workers are collecting hair samples from all male chimps to determine who Teresa's baby daddy is, and when they find him, it will be Snip-Snip: The Sequel.  Teresa had ten other babies before retiring Chimp Haven - Teresa makes eleven.  Damn.  He said he was fixed, girl, but how can you really be sure?   The bastard.  And has he been comin' around since you had that baby?  No.  He's just sittin' over there with his chimp buddies, scratching his ass and bragging.  The balls on that guy!   Posted Jan 19 2007, 03:19 PM by Alisyn with | with 1 comment(s) Filed under: accidental pregnancy, vasectomy, chimpanzee
