  A new theory about the genetic origins of such conditions as autism, schizophrenia, and anxiety is shaking up the psychiatric and medical communities -- and once you read about it, you may find it hard to get out of your head as well. Proposed by Bernard Crespi, a biologist at Simon Fraser University in Canada, and Christopher Badcock, a sociologist at the London School of Economics, the theory, described by the New York Times as equally Freud's in terms of potential game-changing power, posits that many organic mental disorders emerge from a genetic battle of the sexes at the moment of conception.  Read More... • Kids' Diagnosis Can Shed New Light on Parents

  With the numbers of kids who carry a diagnosis of a psychiatric or developmental disorder skyrocketing, more and more parents are looking for answers when their kid seems a little out of step. And in the process, they may uncover some new insights about themselves. A story over the weekend in the New York Times talked about the phenomenon of parents who find, when their child is diagnosed with a disorder such as Asperger's or attention deficit disorder, that  it sheds new light on their own peculiarities and struggles –and sometimes even that of their parents or grandparents.   Read More... • Kids + Medication = Violence, Some Say

  Last week's fatal stabbing of a student in a New Jersey high school by a fellow student allegedly taking prescription medications to control various symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome has focused new attention on the question of the side effects and efficacy of such medications.  Asperger's patients are often "treated for depression and anxiety with anti-depressants - drugs some advocacy groups claim can cause violence."  The Food and Drug Administration currently includes a warning on certain drugs used to treat depression, known as SSRIs (Prozac, Zoloft, etc.), stating that studies have shown increased risk of suicide particularly among teens and children.  This risk does not necessarily translate into violence toward others, of course, but many believe otherwise, stating that "how patients react to the drugs is essentially a crapshoot". • The Many Faces of Autism

  My younger son has Down syndrome.  I know, the headline is about autism, so why am I talking about Down syndrome?  Because having a child who is different from the "norm" gives me a unique perspective that helps me embrace all sorts of people whom I might have dismissed in the past. Like people with autism.  I remember long ago, probably based on some "Afterschool Special" brand of TV "journalism", having thought of autism as being some scary "disorder" of vacant-eyed people who rocked constantly and were mute. It turns out I was completely wrong about that, and in reality, there is a vast spectrum of manifestations of the little-understood world of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Read More...
