How timely that June is National Candy Month, since my younger child has finally deigned to be potty trained and the jelly beans and M&M's are changing hands like stocks on a trading floor. I feel less guilty about dangling sugary treats in front of her now that I know I'm part of a genuine celebration! I'm part of something bigger than myself!
Hotwire poses the question: What candy from your childhood do you miss the most? Definitely the Big Cherry for me, which I know is still out there somewhere but just isn't easily found on shelves in Northern California. Imitators need not apply.
For a less caloric way to celebrate National Candy Month, may I suggest purchasing the exhaustive history of American confectionery, Candyfreak, by Babble's own Steve Almond? It's fun to read and not only can you truly honor the sweetest of months, you can help put the sweet Josephine through college some day.
(Oooh, I just noticed that November 7 is National Bittersweet Chocolate with Almonds Day. I love America.)
