  • FDA Sets Standard For Melamine in Formula

     Well, well, WELL.

    After some public outcry over trace amounts of melamine found in infant formula here in the US, the Food and Drug Administration has finally decided that they can, in fact, set a safety standard for melamine. Previous to the agency’s releasing tests it had done which revealed the presence of the chemical in baby formula, they had said it was impossible to set a safety standard, indicating that any level of melamine was of concern.

    The new level is 1 part per million for both melamine and its chemical relative cyanuric acid.

  • Melamine Found in US Formula

    Thought your baby was safe from melamine-tainted formual because he or she isn't in China? Think again!!

    Yes, tests by the Food and Drug Administration  revealed that formula made by the three biggest formula manufacturers – Abbot Labs, makers of Similac, Mead Johnson, makers of Enfamil, and Nestle, makers of Good Start – has either trace levels of melamine or a chemical by-product of melamine. Together, these formulas make up 90 percent of all formula sold in the US.

    Melamine is the chemical found in Chinese infant formula that has been blamed for killing at least three babies and making at least 50,000 others ill. Of course, the melamine in the Chinese formula was intentionally added to make it look like it had higher protein than it actually did. At the small amounts found in the American formula, the nutritional profile would not be affected. The tainted Chinese formula also had melamine added in much, much higher concentrations than that found in the American formula.
