• They Say: Flavor Up That Milk

  It's pretty common knowledge, either though received wisdom or through research, that flavors of foods a mother eats can be transmitted through breastmilk. I remember looking in vaguely troubled curiosity at an ever so  slightly green bottle  of pumped milk when I’d been on a salad kick while nursing my daughter, and back when I was nannying in college the mom I worked for pumped milk for me to feed the baby and it sometimes smelled of garlic, which I always thought was kind of cool. I came across this study from the University of Copenhagen that not only tested out the flavor theory, but studied what flavors transmitted best and for how long, between bananas, menthol, caraway seed and licorice (obviously, not super common North American flavors, but still interesting). • Are bananas the new oil?

  Everyone who thought bananas were this wonderful and inexpensive food that we stumbled onto here in the States – you were wrong. Very wrong. At least that's what Dan Koeppel said in the New York Times this week. His OP-ED piece, "Yes, We Will Have No Bananas," is currently the most emailed article at nytimes.com. According to this extremely interesting essay, bananas are more exotic than we realize and shouldn't be so cheap. Fruit stands on the streets of Manhattan typically sell the yummy yellow-skinned fruit at 3 or 4 for a buck, which is a great deal by New York standards.
