Kelly wrote a while back about the story of Gary Stocklaufer, the
man considered by a judge to be too obese to be a parent and denied
adopting the baby girl he and his wife had been fostering and were set
to adopt. Remember him?
Well, he went ahead and had bariatric surgery
(donated by a hospital) in order to complete the adoption. While I'm
stunned at the level of sacrifice this man endured (that surgery can be
life-threatening and he'll likely have various issues to contend with
the rest of his life), it also strikes me that any one of us would have
done the same thing or something similar. Seriously, wouldn't you? You
know you would. Denied being the mom or dad of your child, biological
or adopted, most of us would likely do anything to maintain the
connection. We're genetically wired for that sort of thing and that's
how kids survive to grow up and continue the species.
