• Morning News: Stevens Loses; Senate Dems Now at 58

  Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, the guy who risked it all for a free grill, a back massager and a new deck, has lost his bid for re-election. Stevens, who likely would have won handily, had it not been for those pesky election year felony charges, lost narrowing to Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich. All of this adds up to nearly enough Democrats for a filibuster-proof Senate and a nightmare scenario for Republicans. Oh, and Stevens will also likely seek a presidential pardon. (Of course, he is.   It's the embarrassing twist of fate that makes this story so tragically comic. Focus on the Family, the Colorado Springs-based evangelical Christian ministry and media empire, announced yesterday it would lay off more than 20 percent of its workforce due to financial difficulties.   Remember when a loss was a loss? So Barrack Obama has won enough delegates to become the Democratic nominee for President.   I had a funny reaction to the recent New York Magazine cover story about Chelsea Clinton. Maybe its because her dad was the first President I voted for, and I remember how Bill and Hill tried to keep her out of the limelight. • Hillary Clinton Hopes "Mum Strategy" Will Give Her Winning Edge

  Hillary Clinton is turning to daughter Chelsea to help boost her motherly image, and play down her reputation as a "cold, calculating" political player. Since Clinton announced last week that she's "in to win" for president, intensely private Chelsea has been nowhere to be seen. Now that Senator Clinton has been referring to herself more often as a mother, it might be nice if her child showed up for some photo ops. (Or so the Clinton camp strategizes...) Senator Clinton's family is seen as key to help soften up her image and make her seem more "compassionate," but we all know hubby Bill Clinton can't play that role. He is well-loved and, therefore, considered a "distraction."
