
Giggle, write love letters, and hit on members of the
opposite sex in class, and you’ll be considered a star student in Singapore. Two
polytechnic institutes now offer a course called
“Love Relations for Life: A Journey
of Romance, Love, and Sexuality,”
which aims to “teach youth how to fall in love.”
The course is the government’s most recent attempt to raise
the nation’s birthrate, which at 1.24 children per woman of childbearing age,
is one of the lowest in the world. Other, mostly unsuccessful, governmental tactics include
organizing screenings of romantic movies and having newspapers print tips for
how to have sex in the backseat of a car.
