• No Money, No Babies

  This should come as a surprise to no one – when times get tough, birthrates fall. Accordng to this story from Arizona (delightfully titled “Less Baby-Makin’ in Bad Economy”) the birthrate there fell by 3 percent, or about 2000 or so births, since 2007. Not, this might just be a little bit of creative number-tweaking –2007 was a record year for Arizona births. And babies born by the end of this year were, for the most part, conceived before the economy was in quite the tailspin it’s in now. The credit crisis hadn’t happened, gas was hovering in the $2.50 a gallon range, and food prices hadn’t yet started their spike. Still, I know the economy has had some effect.... Read More... • In Singapore, The Biggest Flirt Gets the A

  Giggle, write love letters, and hit on members of the opposite sex in class, and you’ll be considered a star student in Singapore. Two polytechnic institutes now offer a course called “Love Relations for Life: A Journey of Romance, Love, and Sexuality,” which aims to “teach youth how to fall in love.” The course is the government’s most recent attempt to raise the nation’s birthrate, which at 1.24 children per woman of childbearing age, is one of the lowest in the world. Other, mostly unsuccessful, governmental tactics include organizing screenings of romantic movies and having newspapers print tips for how to have sex in the backseat of a car. Read More...
