  • Hitting the Bottle: Sunday Bloody Sunday

Remember back in the day, before you had kids, when Sunday mornings meant long leisurely breakfasts at the local cafĂ©, sipping Bloody Marys and reading the New York Times in its entirety? Or was that just a movie I saw once?

Well, your Sundays may no longer be your own, but that doesn't mean you can't sneak a Bloody Mary now and again. You can make a batch of the mix without vodka and sip it throughout the day. Cut back on the horseradish and Tabasco and your kids might even like it. Just tell them it's Vampire blood.

  • Hitting the Bottle: The Bloody Thank-God-She's Still Sleeping

Bloody mary pickleI've never done a Hitting the Bottle before. There is a good reason for this. I'm not very good at holding my liquor.

I don't mean to say that I'm not a drinker. (Yes, my friends are laughing right now.) I just mainly try to stick to beer and wine. It is easier to count drinks and not accidentally pass out on my lawn.

But that is a story for another time.

For now I'd like to share with you the best Bloody Mary I have ever tasted. My buddy Tony - you may know him better as Crouton Boy posted a fabulous Bloody Mary recipe on Dad Centric a long time ago. My husband found this recipe, made them one evening (we're not picky about when we drink our Bloody Marys around here) and we've been hooked ever since.

    Behold the Bloody Thank-God-She's-Still Sleeping:

    • Fill glass with ice Pour in 1-2" of vodka (I prefer lemon-pepper infused vodka, but suit yourself)
    • Add 1 tsp. horseradish Add Worcestershire sauce (to taste)
    • Add 5-7 shakes of celery salt Add 1-2 tsp. of Old Bay spice (the most important ingredient)
    • Add a few shakes of pepper Add Tabasco or other hot sauce to taste
    • Squeeze in juice of one quarter of lemon or lime
    • Fill to top with Clamato (Spicy V-8 will also do, but Clamato is the best) Pour into shaker, shake 3-5 times, and return to glass (or stir rigorously).
    • Garnish with pickle spear (the best), olives and/or pepperoncini (celery works, too, but booooooring)

I know. I know. Clamato sounds gross, but I swear to you this drink rocks. I hope you like the kick. This shit will clear your sinuses. I mean this in the best way possible.

    Thanks Tony!
