• Babble Talk: Are Boys Held Back From Kindergarten More Often Than Girls?

  I read Holly Korbey's essay on "redshirting" kindergarten boys, part of Babble's Back to School issue, with a mix of shock and awe. I knew how hard it was to decide whether to send a child to kindergarten when his birthday falls dangerously close to a school system's cut-off date. But I did not realize that, as least as Holly describes it, boys are often pressured to be redshirted and wait a year so they can mature. I had even less of a clue about the motivations behind it. Do other moms, as the essay describes, really think their sons will have a better shot at an athletic scholarship if they cool their heels for 12 months before starting school? And do they honestly make the call based on the impact on their boys' future dating abilities? Read More... • Super Old Mom of Newborn Twins: My Son's a Dream! (My Girl? Whatever!)

  Remember the record-breaking Indian woman who, at the age of 70, gave birth to twins to become the world's oldest mother of newborns? Yeah, well despite all the ridicule, the health problems, the expense of IVF and her high-risk pregnancy, she's head over heels for her newborn son.  And he certainly is a cutie! Her daughter however (that's her in the picture without the hat), is just another damn burden for mom and dad (tell me about it, lady, I've got two of them!).   Read More... • The Best Way to Educate: Separate the Boys From the Girls?

  Do boys and girls learn differently? Some say yes, which is why several public schools -- including a few described in this Washington Post article -- are trying same-sex classes. Some of the teachers quoted in this story report they are seeing positive results for the boys, who seem to benefit from classroom settings that allow them the freedom to move around, as well as the girls, who, in one case, thrive in a dimly lit classroom with lots of flowers on the windowsills.   Read More...
