• Because Oprah Has a Thing Or Two to Teach Mommies, Too. Now Stop Rolling Your Eyes and Listen

  I've been a fan of Oprah for a long, long time. I know that makes some people scorn my morning TV spiritual ways but when you've got love like I do, it is just too hard to deny it. One of the things I love most is her ability to acknowledge the work that people do that is nothing like the work she does. If you've ever watched one episode in full, you've probably heard her praise teachers and mothers and folks who have lightbulb moments while doing laundry at 2 a.m. I also think that many of the beliefs she puts into practice are also good practice for parents. • Secrets and Lies

  Moms who smoke pot, breastfeed each other's children, struggle with feelings of ambivalence about their children and their marriages.  Is this the stuff of True Mom Confessions (or another daily read at Babble)? Or just a list of the usual secrets parents keep? When is telling the truth freeing? When is it merely exhibitionism? Chicago Moms blogger Maryann Mohanraj writes about the dilemma all writers, all bloggers, face.  Telling the truth isn't only a decision about privacy (our own and our family's) but also a calculation of the risks of truth-telling balanced again the fear and shame of someone knowing who we really are.  Ms. Mohanraj takes the plunge, bares her soul, and if the comments are any indication, is vindicated for her bravery. • Pot Smokin' Mama Gets the People Talkin'

  Babble's "I'm a Better Mother When I'm Stoned" has predictably sparked many discussions across the blogosphere.  According to the Editor's Note, the "Bad Parent" series (and Babble) " is committed to showing parenting as it really is, rather than as it should be" --an admirable (though unenviable) task. Writer L.J. Wilson assumes there are plenty of people who will "...believe anyone who gets stoned while caring for a child should receive a visit from child protective services." And surprisingly, that's not (mostly) what people say about her maryjane habit. Read More...
