After being outed to the press by sales people at NYC's Veronique Maternity yesterday, actress Drea de Matteo (The Sopranos) and her long-term boyfriend, Shooter Jennings, felt they had no choice but to release a statement to the press confirming her pregnancy. They used the opportunity to slam the maternity boutique for their indescretion, and to urge other pregnant women to boycott the shop. The statement read:
Drea de Matteo and her long time boyfriend Shooter Jennings are having a baby and they
are so excited. Please beware the only
reason we're announcing the news is because the very rude and
condescending salespeople at Veronique Maternity on Madison Avenue
decided to leak this to the press, so please beware if you're trying to
keep your happy secret under wraps. Shop at Pea in the Pod. The
salespeople are lovely and helpful and know how to keep exciting news
to themselves.
That.
Sucks.
Knowing that pregnant celebrities are tabloid gold, some sales lady probably sold the information to the paparazzi for a couple hundred bucks. Easy money for her - and months of being chased by photographers for yet another expectant actress. Of course, the press would've caught wind of the news at some point - but it's just seedy and gross to feed them the information without the consent of the party it concerns. That's crossing a line, that just shouldn't be crossed, especially these days, with paparazzi stalking at an all-time high. I mean, it's a pregnancy, for God's sake, not a freaking fashion trend. Show a little respect!
Congratulations and sympathies to Drea and Shooter - I hope you have a happy, healthy pregnancy, with as little paparazzi as possible.
And a note to Veronique Maternity: You might want to research a little thing called "customer service." I hear it's all the rage.
