Is David Beckham eroding our children’s minds? Most teachers
think so. According to a recent survey, 70 percent of England’s
schoolteachers believe celebrity culture is giving children false beliefs that
education is not necessary for success and that fame and fortune can be easily
be achieved.
And really, who can blame them? With stars like Tila Tequila
forging a name for themselves through MySpace and reality TV making stars out
of your run-of-the-mill melodramatic narcissists, who needs school, anyway? Just
show a little fake tit on your MySpace page and be willing to shriek about your
love life on camera. Oh, and try to be bisexual, kids. Rampant promiscuity is a
sure-fire fame clincher.
In all seriousness, I don’t think it’s all bad to have
children looking up to role models who have achieved success through their
artistic or athletic talents—this is certainly a less classist approach than teaching
kids they need to have a PhD. to amount to anything. So maybe we adults just need to be a little more careful about who we worship.
